Commercial Description:
Cask; Regular.
First brewed in 1969 as Winter Bitter - renamed Extra Special Bitter in 1971.
Ingredients: Pale Ale and Crystal malts; Target, Challenger, Northdown and Goldings hops. Dry hopped in the brewery.
CAMRA Supreme Champion 1978, 1981 and 1985.
Brewed at 5.5% ABV in cask and 5.9% ABV in bottle, ESB is a true liquid legend, and should be savoured as such.
ESB has a wonderful rich mahogany appearance. Taking in the nose, the beer is bursting with cherry and orange, balanced by soft malty toffee and caramel notes. The flavour delivers everything you would expect from such a full-bodied ale. The unique blend of Northdown, Target, Challenger and Goldings hops imparts grassy, peppery notes on the tongue along with intense citrus fruit characters of grapefruits, oranges and lemons. The blend of Pale Ale and Crystal malts in the brew give a biscuity, toffee element to the beer. A smooth, mellow bitterness lingers on the palate to give a superbly satisfying finish.

NOTE: Most Fuller's beer in the US is served by handpump kegs and not a cask. Ask your server.

Smallish, creamy, offwhite head; dark red-brown body. Faint, sourish, smoky aroma. Thin, sourish taste with smoky notes and some roastiness. Some tanginess, some bitterness. Slightly dry aftertaste. Good, but not outstanding. (Strange; I’ve been much more excited by this before.) (On tap at White Horse.)

IT smelled a little nasty. I thought it was going to be another saquashy beer. BUt it turned very yellow, and the foam sticked so great. HTe flavor was good, actually. A little sweet sometimes.

THE ESB - My favourite beer of all time. The Kings Head, Stoke Road, Guildford serves one of the best examples of this fine pint....and I have done extensive research!

Handpump at ’The Sanctuary’, Tothill str, London UK. Slightly hazy, dark copper red with a bronze hue, minimal lacy beige head. A subtle but wonderful fruity aroma with pears and prunes. Taste: mellow, malty, light sweetish, light alcoholic, sherry, again fruity with prunes. Long and dry, yet gentle, bitter aftertaste. A bit ’slippery’, soapy, but a good body.

(Cask, The Wharf, Aalborg) - A classic.- The instant malty flavour leads into a rich marmalade hoppiness, it is always a true pleasure to drink this beer!

Cask. One of my favourite Fuller’s beers. Flowery hop aroma, plus some citrus fruits, oranges and lemons. Fairly sweet maltiness, and a lingering, bitter finish.
