Commercial Description:
Cask; Regular.
First brewed in 1969 as Winter Bitter - renamed Extra Special Bitter in 1971.
Ingredients: Pale Ale and Crystal malts; Target, Challenger, Northdown and Goldings hops. Dry hopped in the brewery.
CAMRA Supreme Champion 1978, 1981 and 1985.
Brewed at 5.5% ABV in cask and 5.9% ABV in bottle, ESB is a true liquid legend, and should be savoured as such.
ESB has a wonderful rich mahogany appearance. Taking in the nose, the beer is bursting with cherry and orange, balanced by soft malty toffee and caramel notes. The flavour delivers everything you would expect from such a full-bodied ale. The unique blend of Northdown, Target, Challenger and Goldings hops imparts grassy, peppery notes on the tongue along with intense citrus fruit characters of grapefruits, oranges and lemons. The blend of Pale Ale and Crystal malts in the brew give a biscuity, toffee element to the beer. A smooth, mellow bitterness lingers on the palate to give a superbly satisfying finish.

NOTE: Most Fuller's beer in the US is served by handpump kegs and not a cask. Ask your server.

Nice beer, need to rate & try again when more awake...Copper brown in colour, some fruit in the aroma. Light body, slightly bitter taste and finishes dry. - a bit malty on second try

Really a classic flavor that holds my interest with every sip. Drunk at the Wildeman in Amsterdam. Full-to-the-brim pint shines with bright, juicy, amber-mahogany, a few sparse bubbles on top. Nose is faint, fruity with a bit of stewed sun tea in there. Tastes mildly bitter, very soft with a fruity backdrop like cherry stem. Light, dry dusting of hops stays for the aftertaste. Refreshing and damned tasty.

[on draught at the Fisherman’s Cottage, Reading] Unmistakeable Fullers flavour, with a bit of extra malt and a slight hint of marmalade. A hint of dry oakiness in the aftertaste, but otherwise there isn’t a lot going on here. Given the strength (very high for a draught bitter) I had expected something rather special. Instead I was disappointed to find it had less depth of flavour than the weaker London Pride. Does go down dangerously easily (as seems to be the case with all Fullers beers), but leaves rather a syrupy mouthfeel.

(Cask at St Urho’s on 2008-05-08) Deep amber colour. Clear. Small white head. Weak nose contains malts and hops. Medium palate. Taste contains malt that’s sligtly sweet and bitterness. Bitterness especially in aftertaste.

Cask at the Victoria Hotel, Beeston, Nottingham. This is better than the very good bottled version. The amber beer has a much stronger soft fruit flavour than the filtered equivalent; I tasted strawberries. It’s a smooth beer with plenty of sweet malt and just the right amount of hops to have a lightly bitter finish. The palate is rich and smooth.

A pint puured at The New Forest Inn, Ashurst, Hampshire. Has an amber body with small off white head. Slightly sweet aroma that reminds me of orange marmalade on toast on a Sunday morning. In the bottled version, the orange marmalade comes through more intensely than the cask version. Not too hoppy. A good dry bitter finish. A fine ESB.
