Commercial Description:
Cask; Regular.
First brewed in 1969 as Winter Bitter - renamed Extra Special Bitter in 1971.
Ingredients: Pale Ale and Crystal malts; Target, Challenger, Northdown and Goldings hops. Dry hopped in the brewery.
CAMRA Supreme Champion 1978, 1981 and 1985.
Brewed at 5.5% ABV in cask and 5.9% ABV in bottle, ESB is a true liquid legend, and should be savoured as such.
ESB has a wonderful rich mahogany appearance. Taking in the nose, the beer is bursting with cherry and orange, balanced by soft malty toffee and caramel notes. The flavour delivers everything you would expect from such a full-bodied ale. The unique blend of Northdown, Target, Challenger and Goldings hops imparts grassy, peppery notes on the tongue along with intense citrus fruit characters of grapefruits, oranges and lemons. The blend of Pale Ale and Crystal malts in the brew give a biscuity, toffee element to the beer. A smooth, mellow bitterness lingers on the palate to give a superbly satisfying finish.

NOTE: Most Fuller's beer in the US is served by handpump kegs and not a cask. Ask your server.

had this one to go with a lunch in a City pub .... the food (battered cod and chips) wasn’t worth the mention, however the brew was .... a medium to full bodied strongly flavored ale, with quite strong bitterness ... quite strong in alcohol too, which you will not feel while drinking, perhaps afterwards ...

Cask at Volo Cask Days 2007. (And also at Volo back in the spring, although I somehow forgot to rate it then...) Hazy orange colour with a faint head. Aroma is floral and herbal, with some fruity malt and a hint of tea. Flavour follows the aroma pretty closely, with some citrus coming through in the finish. Like the cask version of the Pride, this is a great session ale, albeit a slightly stronger one.

Cask at ’Volo Cask Days ’07’. Pours a cloudy amber-orange with a spare lasting bubbly white head. Nice aroma of fruit, floral hops and a hint of spices. Flavour’s also fruity along with some mild hops, some toastiness, a hint of spices and a decent bitter finish. Average bodied. Refreshing and easy to drink.

Cask. At Volo Casks Days ’07. How the HELL did I not have this when I was in England?!!! Ah well ... Clear amber pour, avearge frothy head. Pretty typical dry floral hop aroma backed with slightly tangy light malt ... a little tea-like and fruity, like most decent ESBs (almost a 7, but I was grumpy). The taste followed - light, more or less flat, mildly orange-pekoe hop bitter and light gently toasted malt backing .... nothing spectabular, but solid, and in decent shape - a good maintenance beer in the middle of a tasting session with double IPAs and Peche Mortel on offer ....

Volo Cask Days 2007. Props to Volo for getting this. Had to have a few of to apprectiate it (hard to taste anything after all the hopocalypse). Fruit flavour (raisins?) and mildly hoppy throughout. Good stuff

Volo Cask Days 2007. Kudo’s to Volo for bringing casks of Fullers over! Really fruity aroma, with dry hops - unique and nice. Taste is malt, lots of citrus, appreciable bitterness. Complex and satisfying yet refreshing. It has been over 10 years since I have had this - I was pretty happy to get reacquainted!
