Aroma is more malty than hoppy, which presents a problem to my conception of an IPA. Flavor is also more like unto a bitter than the IPAs I cut my teeth on. Useful as a historic example, I suppose. presario (3010), Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Best before Aug 2003, guess I need to check dates when I buy at the Big Stores, but maybe thats what the hops are for. Big bubbles in a giant long lasting head. Dark amber hinting towards brown. Aroma at times very strong at others subdued. Modest IPA hops and nice malt balance. Like they added hops to London Pride for shipping. Must sample a fresher bottle for comparison. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jun 19, 2004 Amber color, a decent head in my pint glass. Moderate carbonation, decent malty palate. Caramel aroma, a bit of fruitiness, just the way I like an English beer. Mild flavor, definitely malty, ringing of caramel, woodiness, perhaps a touch of vanillla, some dark fruit. A mild bitterness in the finish marks it out as an IPA. I get a kick out of reading the comments of others who note that this doesn’t taste anything like the IPAs they’ve had in America. They’re absolutely right--English IPAs are a different ball-game, being far more malty and far less interested in hop tea infusions. I was fooled by this the first time I had an English IPA, so the expectations-versus-reality problem is understandable. Whether or not this is a good thing is up to you, but I happen to really appreciate the more balanced approach, giving a tinge of bitter bite after a malty front. Very drinkable, went excellent with homemade pizza, was good both cold from the refridgerator and when it was warm to room temperature. Long live the English IPA! scraff (1955), Baltimore, Maryland, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Jun 16, 2004 Sparkling copper, thick off-white head. Aroma was some dark fruits, caramel toffee, with only a slight background hint of juicy hops. English all the way. Malt wins out over the hops in flavor. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, dry malty finish. After 24 hours of hop assualt in S. Cali, this was a nice change of pace while still out there.
