Sept 2004: Pasteurised bottle.
Head to head with <a href=Beer-Ratings.asp?BeerID=5995&FanOfID=4383> Pedigree
and <a href=Beer-Ratings.asp?BeerID=38723&FanOfID=4383> Fiddler’s Elbow
Initial aroma is boiled cabbage and boiled sweets and co2. When the co2 has burnt off the aroma settles into minimal fruit and a touch of cardboard, palma violets and dried cow pat. Taste is fruity - orange spangles. Some toffee. Sweet palate. Minimal hops. Tastier than Fiddler’s Elbow. [2.8}
March, 2007 Tasted with Pedigree [2.5], Spitfire [3.0] and XB [2.6]. Chocolate notes - crystal malt? Hop finish. Fresh, vanilla oak aroma. Creamy chocolate flavour grows into the finish. Hop awareness all the way through - not strong, but present. Hop note lingers - a pleasant soft earthy bitterness. [2.8] Skinnyviking (4170), Copenhagen, Denmark

Just great UK style generous hopped ale with balanced malt. Bitter yet easy to drink. A bit of yeast for me here in bitter finish. Interesting complex mouthfeel. Also tried in bottle where more bitter and more toffee biscuit sweetness. HogTownHarry (4020), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Aug 12, 2005 Bottle (500ml) Poured a very lively, bubbly, copper-gold with a large, creamy, foamy off-white head. Oodles of very tiny bubbles which lasted forever. Aroma is mild - a nice ESB with moderate roast malts, a little hop sting, a little candyish and a little fruity. Taste is surprisingly fairly bitter after the sweet nose, with a mixed citrus bitterness. The mouthfeel is very lively and a bit astringent - while this is a bit malty and mild, it still has a hoppy finish. Not as hop-tart as the ESB which I’ve had on cask in London a few times. When poured, yields a light brown lively head full of medium to small bubbles. Its body is a nice clear dark transparent copper color. It had a very nice light malty taste with a hint of carbonation. Very smooth and well rounded flavor.
