matt7215 (578), Cambridge, Ontario, Canada Jul 15, 2008 500 ml bottle # 03903. from the LCBO. pours reddish brown with a nice tan head. aromas are lovely plentiful english malts and a big dose of hops. almost barley wineish in the aromas. flavours are truely great. very solid malt structure provides ample balance to the aggressive hop profile. everything works very well together and the progression is very well thought out. this is my first of this vintage and im quite impressed.
Parasympatikus (24), , Finland Oct 10, 2008 Brownish red clear color and light beige head. Syrupy, fruity nose. Flavor of nice malty fruits and fresh hops. Medium palate is quite soft. DuffMan (1962), Calgary, Alberta, Canada Sep 25, 2008 Orange-amber, slightly hazy, creamy off-white head. Toffee nose with elements of spice, light fruits, nuts, and booze. Chewy toffee malt, with an interesting interplay of fruit and earthy hops, a very bitter finish with warming alcohol at length. Very nice, paired with traditional steak pie. larsga (2311), Oslo, Norway Sep 24, 2008 Biggish offwhite head. Deep red body. Firm roasty malty aroma with strong sharp citric hopnotes. Not entirely unlike a US IPA. Intense sweet roasty malt taste with caramelly alcoholic notes and orangey hops. Soft, full, smooth mouthfeel. Some alcohol heat. Sharpish resiny notes. Taste hasn’t completely come together yet, it seems. Full roasty malty aftertaste with minty notes. Long lingering orangey malts taste. Good, with real subtlety and great sippability, but not a complete success. Have another bottle I’ll rerate in a couple of years. (0.5l bottle, Alko, Helsinki.) ZazuH (20), Brentwood, California, USA Sep 22, 2008 Bottle (cellared one year after purchase) - wonderful bright amber/orange pour w/ rich off white head. Aromas of molasses, caramel, fig and clove. Spiciness follows through to palate; notes of fig, clove, vanilla and nutmeg reminiscent of spice cake. Sweet and syrupy w/ soft carbonation and slight alcohol warming. Finishes w/ a clean hop bitterness (grapefruit). Good starting point for those working their way towards barley wine. MiP (6026), Flensburg, Germany Sep 21, 2008 Bottle at EBF08. Vinous aroma. Cloudy reddish brown colour. The flavour is actually not that powerful, vinous with some alcohol.
