Commercial Description:
At Fulton, we love hops. That star in our logo is made out of hops, in case you hadn’t noticed. Of course, the hops plant contributes to the character of all of our beers, but sometimes we just want more. That’s why we decided to brew the Sweet Child of Vine. Generous quantities of Simcoe and Glacier hops are added throughout the boil. Then, late in the fermentation process, we infuse the Sweet Child with another dose of Glaciers, imparting a bouquet of hop aroma that veritably bursts forth upon serving. But don’t let all this talk of hops mislead you. The Sweet Child has a serious malt backbone to stand up to all those hops, creating a delightful balance that will keep you coming back for more. It’s an IPA, Fulton-style.

Tap, Muddy Pig. Pours a deep clear reddish color with very minimal head. Flavor is soft malts, a hint of biscuits, mildly sweet. Finish is soft aromatic floral hops and somewhat dry. Not a bad offering for a rookie breweing company, this is an easy drinking session ale along the lines of Summit EPA.

A bit musty with subdued pine. Vegetal, not a vibrant IPA, but an attempt at balance can be found here. Not weak, but not aggressive. On tap at Happy Gnome, St. Paul.

Pint at 3 Squares. Reddish brown color, thin head, nice lacing. Not a lot of hops in the aroma, kind of fruity. Very hoppy bite in the flavor with some pine and grapefruit notes. Nice lingering bitter finish. Some good unique flavors in this one.

TAP @ Stub & Herb’s - Minneapolis: copper pour, off white head. Floral hops and caramel on the nose, taste is malt-balanced hop / floral with toffee. I had heard mixed reviews on this guy, but I was pleasantly surprised. Pretty good stuff.

On draft at the Gnome, served a little too cold. When I first got it I could barely pick out the aromas but after it warmed a little I found some nice floral hops, and sweet carmel very, well balanced. The flavor was pretty much a direct reflection of the aroma with a touch more sweetness, the finish was clean, not very bitter and had something else that reminded me of mint. The appearance is a deep amber almost mahogany. Pretty full bodied but very sessionable. Overall, a good first impression.

On draught at the Happy Gnome in St. Paul, MN during their Official Launch Party on October 28, 2009. Pours a clear copper amber colored brew with a thin off-white head that quickly dissipates and leaves behind some spotty lacing. Aroma is very light of caramel malt, some Simcoe and flowery hops, a touch of pear and a hint of sweet almond marzipan. Taste is medium bodied, nicely balanced carbonation with flavors of mostly caramel malt, a hint of toffee and some flowery hops in the background. Finish has a mild light bitterness that quickly disappears. This beer profile is closer to a German Vienna style beer than an American IPA as the bitterness quickly disappears and leaves behind a mostly a caramel and toffee aftertaste. It is not an in-your-face, west coast caliber citusy IPA as one of their local competitor is known for, the Fulton guys do not skimp on the full body malt character in this inauguration beer.
