Commercial Description:
This is our rendition of a Dry Irish Stout, circa 1890. Deep roasted malt is what makes a stout a stout, and years ago the fire of the kiln would have added its distinct smoky flavor during the roasting process. Three Feet Deep rekindles that lost flavor with a small addition of peat smoked malt. At 14.4° Plato, this is not a heavy beer, but you wouldn’t know it as the round and earthy quality of peat fills your senses. Our stout is a return to County Cork and the warmth of the Irish hearth.

12oz. Bottle: Aroma of dark malts, roasting, light chocolate, band-aids, light chocolate, slight peat, and a hint of smoke. Poured very dark brown in color with a large, creamy, rocky, brown head that diminished but lasted throughout. Cloudy. Opaque. Some particles. Very good lacing. Flavor is lightly sweet and light to medium bitter. Tastes of dark malts, roasting, Bamburg wood, smoke, light chocolate, and a hint of caramel. Medium body. Slightly dry texture. Average carbonation. Bamburg wood, light chocolate, and roasted malt finish.

12 oz bottle from Capones. Poured a deep dark black that was slightly thin and an average bubbly light beige head. Aroma was nice with lots of peat smoke, molassess, dark corn syrup, cola and dry toast. The palate is overly bubbly and the body is thin and liquidy for a stout. The flavor has lots of hickory smokey sweetness about it along with dry toast and some dark roasted malts. Not bad but I’ve had better from Futhermore.

12oz bottle. Opaque black with thick beige head. Smoky and creamy, with a solid sandy hop bitterness in the background. Big chocolate presence as well, think Chocolate Cream Dry Stout. Mellow, chocolate milkshake finish. The peat smoked malt adds a nice dimension to it, making it slightly reminiscent of Old Chub smokewise. A great modern Stout.

Bottle - Furthermore just keeps coming through for me with their small, but quality lineup. Three Feet Deep pours black with a foamy tan head. Smells sweet and earthy, with a little milkiness and sweet chocolate. Taste starts with just a hint of whiskey, then smoke, bitter coffee and chocolate, and roasted malt. It has a nice warming finish and feels medium-bodied and smooth. Don’t know much about peat, but this beer educated me. Great stuff.

12oz bottle. Pours a deep black with a thin espresso head. Aroma is appropriately stout-ish, with roasted malt and coffee along with hints of peat, vanilla, and smoke. Taste is full and dry, with an initial flavor of peat, smoke, and roasted malt hitting hard before a mellow aftertaste of tobacco and bitter coffee. This actually reminds me more of a nice blend of pipe tobacco than scotch, in an odd way. Whatever it may be, it’s a fun twist on a stout.
