Commercial Description:
The laws protecting the brewing of kolsch are as strict as the German Purity Law of 1516. Kolsch beer can only be brewed within the city of Cologne. As the best-known kolsch brewery, Gaffel's flavor is derived from an ale yeast that is "lagered" (or aged) in cold cellars. Gaffel is pale, faintly fruity with a crisp, hop finish. Enjoy as an aperitif or digestif.

500 ml. Clear pale gold with a medium and lasting head. Aroma of honey and faint grass. Flavor is the same, with more honey on the front and more grass on the finish. Light body is slightly tingly.

500mL bottle. Clear bright yellow, white head. Floral/ aromatherapy aroma. Flavor is of a slice of Puerto Rican Bread. ( pan de aqua). Very light. Smooth malt body. Pleasant bready, hop bitterness.

Bottled 50cl. It pours a yellow beer with a white head. The nose is bready, decent, but not very powerful. I sampled the beer at the temperature indicated on the label. (6 to 8 degrees celsius). Hints of lemon, wood and honey. The taste is wonderfully bready with hints of apricots. A good hop character. Some hay and heather. Bitter, medium bodied. A very pleasant mouthfeel. The finish is bitter with hints of herbs and lemon. A great beer.

My prejudices are clear and it’s hard for me to get excited about a Kolsch, but this one made it impossible. Crystal clear gold ... overly filtered ... with small white head. Nothing else at all striking. Thin in the mouth, thin in the nose ... just nothing to say about this.

A nice crisp beer with light hops and a nice smooth bit of malt flavor. Would go over well with the typical lager drinkersmethinks.

Appearance: Very light straw gold with a slight haze Aroma: Hay, straw and noble hops with a pilsner malt character Flavour: Very light snappy and clean. Floral hop flavour. A light touch of pilsner malt flavour. Mouthfeel: Light, very light and fluffy, dry Overall: Hay and straw with some light floral hop aroma and pilsner malt character. Little to no percievable bitterness.
