Commercial Description:
The laws protecting the brewing of kolsch are as strict as the German Purity Law of 1516. Kolsch beer can only be brewed within the city of Cologne. As the best-known kolsch brewery, Gaffel's flavor is derived from an ale yeast that is "lagered" (or aged) in cold cellars. Gaffel is pale, faintly fruity with a crisp, hop finish. Enjoy as an aperitif or digestif.

bottle from O’Donnell’s in Ft Wayne - Pours golden with a one finger white head. It smells of light malts and a hint of hops. The flavor is light and well balanced and manages to avoid being watery. The finish is crisp and mildly hopped. This brew is a good quaff when you want something lighter.

Golden colored beer with a rough laced head like I would expect from "pils". Malty aroma and flavours. Quickly disappearing but still better than most pils beers I had before. This was my first Kölsch. I will have another one when I have the occasion.

Draught in some small town near Cologne. My first Kolsch. Golden with a medium, short-lasting, white head. Malty aroma with some nice hoppiness. Nice hoppy flavor with a mild bitter finish. Medium-bodied. Very delicate and refreshing.

On-tap, served in a Gaffel stange glass. Gaffel Koelsh, not Kölsch, was on the tap handle, which is how this drew my interest. Clear pale golden appearance with active, steady carbonation, tight foamy white head, decent retention, a good looking Kölsch. Mainly clean smelling nose, light sweet pale malts, touch of grain, herbal, floral hops. The proper, firm light body, crisp and dry tasting, saltine cracker-like malts, a subtle white grape fruitiness, assertive, spicy hops that have a nice sharp bite towards the end, dry and clean in the finish, leaving your mouth wanting more. Extremely smooth, easy drinkability, quite refreshing, I am going to be looking for this in bottles now.

Gaffel Kölsch is a very clear and sparkling light straw-colored ale with a big, puffy, fluffy white head that leaves great lacing. The aroma is pretty faint: sweet fruity esters and wood. It is medium bodied and dry. It has a grainy flavor with noble hops at the end. Very German.

Pours the usual light golden colour with a fair amount of carbonation. The aroma is grassy and the taste is, at first one of mellow hops, but has a bit of a tart aftertaste, which I didn’t care for so much. I don’t think it’s as nice as some of it’s German peers I’ve had rescently, it got harder to drink as I went along. Not bad, though.
