Commercial Description:
The laws protecting the brewing of kolsch are as strict as the German Purity Law of 1516. Kolsch beer can only be brewed within the city of Cologne. As the best-known kolsch brewery, Gaffel's flavor is derived from an ale yeast that is "lagered" (or aged) in cold cellars. Gaffel is pale, faintly fruity with a crisp, hop finish. Enjoy as an aperitif or digestif.

Pours a very light straw golden with a pillowy head. Aromas are light and not fruity in any way but some sulphur, bready malts and hops are evident. The body is light. The flavor is light on the tongue with more maltiness than your average American pilsner but not as much as I expect out of a Kolsch and certainly not the fruity ale characteristic that I get, at least in mine =). The finish has little to no bitterness but it is fairly dry and quenching asking the drinker to open another.

Bottle. Clear golden color with a small white and tons of bubbles. Looks like ginger ale. Fruity, malty aroma with hints of straw. Mildly sweet, malty and straw flavor that finishes dry and mildly bitter. Easy drinking, but kind of thin.

Draught at Papa Joe’s Biersalon, Cologne, 300 ml, Filtered. Pale Gold (surprise!), more highly carbonated than most. Quite a thinly flavoured Kolsch, but by no means the worst. Maltier in character and whilst there is some hoppiness it is very understated. Slight cardboard note and a little butterscotch (I refuse to call it diecityl because I can’t spell it). Average, which is not what you can say about the Pub which is a wow, fantastiche.

Plain. Very plain. Dry, underhopped, not very crisp. Not much to say. Muted aroma. Girlie beer.

(Bottle 50 cl) Pale golden with a decent, white head. Very refined, crisp and dry body - albeit a bit thin. Sharp and pure, fresh and prickling with a wee touch of fruit. 240901

33 cl bottle, bbe March 06. Light brass colour, clear, strong sparkling, small head leaving lace. Light hoppy aroma with ethyl acetate (UHU glue ester (solvent)), some grapefruit and a phenolic hint. Refreshing, dry, hoppy and fruity taste with mint in the aftertaste. Medium body, pronounced carbonation, long finish.
