Commercial Description:
The laws protecting the brewing of kolsch are as strict as the German Purity Law of 1516. Kolsch beer can only be brewed within the city of Cologne. As the best-known kolsch brewery, Gaffel's flavor is derived from an ale yeast that is "lagered" (or aged) in cold cellars. Gaffel is pale, faintly fruity with a crisp, hop finish. Enjoy as an aperitif or digestif.

Bouteille 500ml.

Bottle- Poured a clear pale gold with thick foam head. Mild aged yeast-hop quality with smooth malts and crisp mouth feel. Grains blend well with a slight citrus spice, nice drinker.

Until my visit in Köln last week, Gaffel Kölsch from bottle was the first Kölsch I had tasted, and I did not like it. But when its from tap, its something different, But the other Kölsch’es I tried was better than this.

Bought at the SAQ. Golden body with thick foamy white head. Smells of corn, cereal and maybe hops? Flavor is somewhat mild, some earthen taste. Feels lively and fresh. Refreshing but not much going for it in the taste department.

Bottle: Poured a bright golden color Kolsch with a rather large foamy head with good retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of light diacetyl with some butter and light sweet malt. Taste is also dominated by lightly sweet cereal with some very subtle hosp and some diacetyl is clearly detectable. Body si about average with some good carbonation. Not very interesting or something that I would wish to have more often.

12oz bottle from BeerGestapo, thanks Mike. Served in a Celabrator stem glass, the closest thing I have to a traditional stange. Pours a clear pale gold color topped by a half inch of bright white head. Smells grainy with a hint of spicy noble hops. Crisp and refreshing are the first things that come to mind as the beer enters my mouth. Tastes a lot like a German pils with a little less hops. some crackery grain and hints of grass and spicy hops. Balanced bitterness, never sweet nor bitter. Not mind blowing but a well made execution of the style. How lawnmower beers should be done.

Part of SAQ 2009 effort, going up from miserable to pathetic as of the choice (please don’t give up; many appreciate). Yellowish clear color. After I nearly got an insolation while mowing the lawn, this beer was amazingly refreshing. Pretty malty at 4,8%. Dominant citrus, slightly spicy and bitter, good mouthfeel. Pretty enjoyable blond light summer beer to me. I’d like to compare as the style seems interesting...
