Commercial Description:
Our version of the classic London ESB style was put together by myself and Bob Hudson when he came to New Zealand for the first time in 1998. We were on holiday in Northland and had just completed an exhaustive internal assessment of the style (in the sun) when the recipe struck us. Brewed with Maris Otter and two other darker malts from Simpsons it has generous additions of classic UK hops throughout the boil. The resulting ale is deep copper-red with full bitter/sweet flavours. There are powerful aromatic hops on the nose and palate. A pint for supping not quaffing.

Cask at the brewpub. Pours a deep brown amber with a small eggshell white head. Sweet malts and caramel on the nose, as well as aromatic hops, fruit, and a rich earthiness. Hoppy, earthy, sweet flavor. Medium bodied. Bitter- the best of the three bitters I tried at Galbraith.

Nice copper colour, well balanced bitter with a hoppy taste and a hint of citrus. Good beer.

Draught at Galbraith’s Alehouse, Auckland. Pours amber with a creamy white head. This has a good malt backbone for a bitter, and was well balanced with fruity hops. A decent drop from the hand pump.

(Cask) Clear, dark amber with a lacing, off-white head. Lovely fruity aroma. Quite full-bodied with a soft mouth feel and a low carbonation. Lots of dry caramel notes - perhaps even a little burned. Some fruit and vitamin notes. A fairly bitter finish. A very solid ESB. 070208

Tasted 11/06. Sweet malty caramel aroma, Lovely red/brown/copper colour poured with alovely full head. Complex from the outset. Delicious malt / hop combinations, a fruit/nut smorgasboard. Bitter sweet, great finish, If this was all I drunk for the rest of my life I’d be quite content

Pint pulled at the brew pub, a light brown with a white bubbled head. A good rich malty aroma, slightly toasted with a touch of tobacco. Deep earthy qualities to the smooth malty palate and some burnt toffee notes. Damn fine if I do say so.

Extremely moorish ESB styled beer, used to be my favourite of the Galbraiths range but either my palate has changed or the recipe has changed over the years.... In any case it’s still a great beer, the citrus twist to it is especially good Re-rated 24/10/08 seems like this has come full circle, back to the glory days! Rich fruitcake nose, amber colour with gorgeous belgian lace, amazing fruity full bodied mouthful with a lingering bitter finish, so fruity that it makes me think of raisons soaked in some sort of liquor.
