Hops on the nose, with faint malt, as it warms fresh pear, peach and herbal notes. Rich yet balanced hops, Oak? with pear, pine a light richness. Well incoperated spice and hops that linger...Though I appear in the minority, I really enjoyed this. heykevin (1269), Iowa City, Iowa, USA

Spicy cinnamon aroma, (not cinnamon hot alcohol, thought). Actually, now that I smell deeply, the aroma is spot on my mother’s plum pudding, before putting on the hard sauce, anyways.... Flavor is very spicy--clove, cinnamon, a bit of tea, plenty of alcohol. The spice character becomes a bit cloying rather quickly, but easily the best Gale’s beer I’ve had. Nut brown. Practically no head. Sweet and yeasty aroma. Very low-carbonated. Mouthfeel is like christmas-pudding: thick and yeast+ginger. Ale where alcohol really kicks. Warming bittersweet aftertaste. (6/2/6/2/9 2.5)
Re-rated, same vintage a year later
Ruby, no head. Glue aroma. Portwinous palate, spicey and fruity. Flat. Complex. (4/4/7/3/12 3.0) Sickboy282 (1098), San Diego, California, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Mar 30, 2004 Pours a normal amber for an ale with minimal white head. Aromas of cinnamon and spice. Tastes of the same. Spices, spices and spices... as Dasilky said, it's like Anchor Steams chrismas ale, yet the alcohol isn't as noticable as theirs. A decent brew that goes down smooth. | 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Mar 29, 2004 A very sour, gueuze like aroma accompanies this ruby brown, thin headed brew. Flavor is dominated by some up front hops and a lot of dark fruit and sourness. A very strange beer...not sure what to make of it. guzzler67 (1281), Hanover, Maryland, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Mar 2, 2004 2003 bottle. Had the appearance of an unfiltered apple cider. Small head that faded quickly. Earthy, vinous aroma. Sharp, biting, spicy taste that had a bit of a red fruit flavor. Finish was dry and slightly peppery. YourDarkLord (1800), Urbana, Illinois, USA
| 1.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 2/10 | 2/5 | 2/10 | 1/5 | 5/20 | Feb 26, 2004 Murky brown with no head. Floral and spice in the nose. Mouthfeel was unappealing. Carbonation, watery. The taste was, well, awful. Not a merry Christmas ale.
