| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Sep 21, 2004 Typical Gale’s look, murky orange amber with almost no head even after a vigorous pour. The aroma is peat, caramel, sour apple, and some alcohol. The flavor is quite full, smoky peat malts with a ton of sweet caramel and butterscotch. The alcohol is so well masked. Medium full non-carbonated body. Fairly dry finish given the amount of sweetness. A damn fine English barley wine and far and away the best beer I have yet had from Gale’s. This one has aged quite well. I never had it while it was young but it is extremely mellow yet complex with a simply divine aftertaste. God Save the Queen! marcus (1896), Sacramento, California, USA

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Sep 4, 2004 Light chestnut color with no head. The taste is very sweet and almost port like. It has strong raisin flavours. Theres no carbonation and even for the 12% abv it lacks the alcohol sharpness. robertsreality (2460), Minnesota, USA

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Aug 4, 2004 Pours a dark copper color with no head. Aroma is of sweet barley. The taste is solid malted barley. There seems to be a bite of raw barley at the end that made my head snap back. Very light and thin though. Tasty. 5000 (2600), Hardened Liver, Washington, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 2/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Aug 4, 2004 Bottle pours fiery amber, virtually no head, no lacing, no carbonation, with lots of large chunks of sediment floating about.   Aroma is of oak and tart/sour fruit with minor alcohol notes.   Forwardly vinous, burnt brown sugar, figs, dates, with a bit of sourness on the tongue.   Very slight floral tint coming through too.   Body and mouthfeel seem a bit thin for a 12% Barley Wine.   Finishes rather light too, which is odd given the style and ABV.   Wondering if this is past its prime... either way, its decent but lacking in being very lively.
