| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | May 13, 2007 Found a stash of it at Tanakaya. Pours like liquid caramel and absolutly no head. Aroma is...wow. Sweet, molasses, port, oak, alcohol, malt, raisin, and dark fruit. Palate is very thick and creamy. Nearly no carbonation. Tastes of smokey molasses, sweet malt, floral, oak, has a bit of belgian tones to it. Finshes smooth with a sweet alcoholic bitterness. Great. A damn’d shame this isn’t being brewed anymore. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Mar 26, 2007 Another gem I found in Tokyo. Cloudy dark amber, no hint of a head, rather still. Rich, sweet, port, caramel, oak....wow, there’s a lot going on here and that just in the nose.
Sticky sweet with plenty of robust oak, soy sauce, cotton candy, floral hops, lip puckering acidic finish. To me this has qualities of a Belgian quad as well as a Lambic. An interesting beer for sure. I would love to have had a tasting of this over the past few years to note the differences in aging it. bhensonb (4360), Woodland, California, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Mar 21, 2007 Seems to have been released in 2002. Aroma of dark fruit and alcohol. Not plummy, just dark. The color is brandy with ruby glints. Head? At 12% and aged, I don’t think so. Starts with wood, smooth malt sweetness, some arguable raisin. Finishes astringent rather than bitter. Very smooth. There is some bitter in the finish, and it arguably balances the malt. The finish suggests aging in brandy barrels. Get this if you can. There will be no more. In February there were a very few at Tops in Phoenix. Reminds me of the stronger Sam Adams beers. Like weak Calvados, rather than strong beer. Here’s to Gales. May it long be remembered. scania (184), Malmö, Sweden

| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jan 8, 2007 Pulled the cork from this bottle and poured a nice dark liquid. Last of the pour was sediments from the bottom. I smelled immediatley the raisons, [plums and perhaps a small amount of alcohol. First taste was sharp with bitterness, but not totally undrinkable. I would recommend that this beer be a sipper. LyndaNova (497), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA

Ending is of malt, alcohol and earthy hops. after4ever (2806), Brier, Washington, USA
| 2.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 7/20 | Dec 28, 2006 9.3 oz. This is just a random little curiosity peeking out from the shelves at Big Star the other day. You can tell how still it is just from the *sound* of the pour: dead, splooshy plops. And for some reason I seem to be a magnet for the unfermented sugars of the world this evening: more enormous sticky-sweet notes as soon as you stick your nose in the glass. Raisins and port and plums. Just a dark fruit, um, jubilee. If you will. Unrelentingly sour and flat from the attack through the finish...blecch. No wonder a 4-year-old barleywine was so reasonably priced. I guess no matter how cynical you get about retail pricing, it’s never enough to keep up.
