Commercial Description:
The Three Tuns Tavern opened for business in 1732. Since then it has grown and changed with the times. Over the years it has been called the Barren Hill Hotel and the Lafayette Hotel. At the General Lafayette Inn as it is known today, we strive to produce innovative, world class beers that reflect the American Colonial spirit with a bit of French flair.

To commemorate the 275th anniversary of our building we offer this hand-bottled, Barleywine-style ale brewed with imported English ingredients.

With time this beer should gain considerable depth and complexity. Savor it.

Brewed from malted barley, hops, water and three strains of yeast. Aged in Oak Barrels. Limited to 275 bottles.

Pours a transparent dark copper mahogany with a thin ring of off-white head. Aroma of sweet biscuity pale and caramel malts with rich fruity estery cmplexity. Body starts rich and dark caramely sweet with a good amount of light fruity esters before a drier sweet bready finish. A pretty complex barleywine, but could use some time to age.

Poured deep amber color with a reddish hue. The aroma was sweet and sugary with nice notes of dark fruit. The flavor was fairly sweet and sticky but dries out to make it nice and drinkable. The alcohol is very well hidden. Full bodied. This stuff was very nice.

Pours a very dark, ruby hued brown in my small snifter. Nose is sweet and thick with malts. Flavor is sweet and there is no real noticable alcohol present. Nice caramel tones. Seems to be some minor wood influence. Feel is thick and a bit sticky. Very easy to drink. I had this on bottle about a month ago and it was nice then. I think I liked it out of the bottle just a wee bit more.

Sampled at the RBPG; bottle courtesy of jasonm. Big old nose to this one. Oak, vanilla, alcohol vapors, macerated raisins and figs. Treacle. Deep amber brown, clear, with no head. Heavy oily body with light carbonation. Starts sweet and stays that way. Raisins, oak, vanilla; rich and malty with alcoholic warming. Sweet and syrupy almost to the point of being overly cloying. Nice, but would love to try in another few years.

22oz bottle courtesy of jasonm at Pittsburgh gathering on 1/27/08. Pours deep brown in color, with nice tan foam, good lacing. Huge malty aroma with lots of sweetness showing through. Flavor continues with the sweetness, like drinking sugar coated raisins. All I need is some bran and this shit is breakfast.

A decent barley wine. I am not big on the style, but this isn’t as bad as some I’ve had. Aroma was strong caramel malt. Almost like a melted Sugar Daddy. Pour was a dark amber with no head. Taste was too sweet for me. Strong caramel and sugar in the front and a vanilla and heavy malt backbone. This isn’t Vicks Vapo-Rub but borders it.
