Commercial Description:
The Three Tuns Tavern opened for business in 1732. Since then it has grown and changed with the times. Over the years it has been called the Barren Hill Hotel and the Lafayette Hotel. At the General Lafayette Inn as it is known today, we strive to produce innovative, world class beers that reflect the American Colonial spirit with a bit of French flair.

To commemorate the 275th anniversary of our building we offer this hand-bottled, Barleywine-style ale brewed with imported English ingredients.

With time this beer should gain considerable depth and complexity. Savor it.

Brewed from malted barley, hops, water and three strains of yeast. Aged in Oak Barrels. Limited to 275 bottles.

On tap at the brewpup. $5 for a 5 oz. glass. That’s actually pretty damn expensive considering I’m getting it right there at the source. Nice dark brown with ruby highlights, minimal head, some lacing. Nice, big aroma of cherries, molasses, figs, brown sugar. Flavor was very heavy, alot of dark fruits, some oak, a large sense of maraschino cherries and brown sugar. Sticky and chewy. It took me like 25 minutes to finish the 5 oz. glass. This may need age to tone down the sweetness a bit. Not world class, but very good.

Pours ruby/brown, with a small and quickly disappearing head. Aroma is malt, cherries, alcohol, dark fruit, and caramel. Flavor is cherries, malt, caramel, brown sugar, alcohol, and dark fruit. Fairly heavy body, with a syrupy feel. Sweet and decadent. A great beer, and worthy of my 900th rating.

Really sweet. Definately good at masking the high abv. But then again I’m a sucker for high alcohol barleywines. This is a pretty descent english barleywine. Only thing is I’m not tasting the oakiness...

Draft. Deep coudy ruby color with tan head. Aroma of malt, cherries, light wood, plum, and alcohol. The taste was sweet and malty with fruity cherry flavors. Rich mouthful with hot sugary finish. This was Very good. I agree that it’s still young and hot, but you can taste the potential. Oh yeah, 5oz $5.

Pours ruddy medium brown color with 1-finger khaki head that goes away and never returns. Aroma is nice; caramel malt, prunes, berries, tobacco, mincemeat, plum, blackberry, some feety funky notes. The aroma is very complex. The taste is plummy, pruney, with caramel malt, brown sugary figs, tobacco, cabernet, and slight maple notes, plus some mid-palate hops and funky notes. Remains on the sweet side, and somewhat syrupy. The alcohol is minorly noticeable, but to me it doesn’t detract; rather, it adds to the nobility of this one. With age, this could easily become a perfecto robusto.

Deep reddish amber in color with a little head. Caramel malty aroma. Toffee roasty nutty notes. Malty hoppy flavor. Citrusy earthy notes. Nice. Medium bodied. Sweet tasting. Its too hot rght now needs some time. iFinish is sweet. Decent beer. Could use sometime though.

Appears a hazy, mahogany toned amber with a small, tan head that quickly fades into a mild collar. Light spots of lacing are left around the glass. CO2 levels are extremely low and at over 13 %, there aren’t too many yeast strains that would remain viable enough to produce CO2 when bottle conditioned. I didn’t see any yeast remnants in the bottom of the bottle, so I’m guessing that it was tank conditioned. Smell is of caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, oak, apple, hot rum, and raisins. Taste mimics the aromas with syrupy, sugary, molasses, & caramel sweetness up front, along with candy sugar, and ripe fruit notes. This is just way too young right now like a port that hasn’t developed all of it’s layers yet. Mouthfeel is syrupy, chewy, sweet, caramel, very hot, and boozy. This will mellow in about 4 years and I’m predicting it will be full of plenty of complexities but it’s just too hot and sweet right now to fully enjoy.
