Commercial Description:
The Three Tuns Tavern opened for business in 1732. Since then it has grown and changed with the times. Over the years it has been called the Barren Hill Hotel and the Lafayette Hotel. At the General Lafayette Inn as it is known today, we strive to produce innovative, world class beers that reflect the American Colonial spirit with a bit of French flair.

To commemorate the 275th anniversary of our building we offer this hand-bottled, Barleywine-style ale brewed with imported English ingredients.

With time this beer should gain considerable depth and complexity. Savor it.

Brewed from malted barley, hops, water and three strains of yeast. Aged in Oak Barrels. Limited to 275 bottles.

Draft @ the tiedhouse. Well, I probably shoudn’t have paid $16 for a beer that I have a couple bombers of in the celler, but screw it. This one has a really pretty reddish-brown color with a medium head. Aroma is oh so inviting - heavy burnt caramel and sugar, rich raspberry, syrup, and some light wood. Flavor is mildly woody with loads of dark sugar and fruit - delectible raspberries, maple syrup, brown sugar....Sweet, syrupy and full bodied. I’m not sure how the bottles are holding up, but this keg from 2006 was damn good with nary a hint of alcohol. Awesome barleywine!

Bottle shared by toncatcher. Nearly perfect score for this one. Increadible aroma’s and flavor. Brown sugar, mollases, caramel, almost no hops which was a good thing. For me this would be a beer that is severly underated.

Suprised to run into another General (as we say in the south Luh-fay-it) beer. This place was cool as hell. Anyway a dark amber apperance with a moderate head. The aroma has an oaky presence with some cherries, raisins, cherries, and caramel. The flavor is quite sweet and complex with some vanilla, molasses, brown sugar, raisins, and caramel. The alcohol is masked well for 13% but still shows. Dear god is this a nice barleywine!

Pours ruddy medium brown color with 1-finger khaki head that goes away and never returns. Aroma is nice; caramel malt, prunes, berries, tobacco, mincemeat, plum, blackberry, some feety funky notes. The aroma is very complex. The taste is plummy, pruney, with caramel malt, brown sugary figs, tobacco, cabernet, and slight maple notes, plus some mid-palate hops and funky notes. Remains on the sweet side, and somewhat syrupy. The alcohol is minorly noticeable, but to me it doesn’t detract; rather, it adds to the nobility of this one. With age, this could easily become a perfecto robusto.

Draft. Deep coudy ruby color with tan head. Aroma of malt, cherries, light wood, plum, and alcohol. The taste was sweet and malty with fruity cherry flavors. Rich mouthful with hot sugary finish. This was Very good. I agree that it’s still young and hot, but you can taste the potential. Oh yeah, 5oz $5.

Bottle from cquiroga (I think) at Lost Abbey 3rd anniversary. Yellow paper label large bottle being ignored as some other rarities are being passed around. Excellent. dark amber color. Sweet buttery malty, almost as if it were barrel aged. Alcohol well hidden.

Pours ruby/brown, with a small and quickly disappearing head. Aroma is malt, cherries, alcohol, dark fruit, and caramel. Flavor is cherries, malt, caramel, brown sugar, alcohol, and dark fruit. Fairly heavy body, with a syrupy feel. Sweet and decadent. A great beer, and worthy of my 900th rating.

Thin head that dissipates quickly with light carbonation. Light orange in color. Surprisingly weak aroma especially in the 5oz snifter they served it in. Dark mahagony brown in color. Wow, amazing flavor. Huge thickness and sweetness. Alcohol is prominent with lots of caramel and sweet chewy malts. Super thick and sweet. Kind of flat in the mouth but who cares when there is this much flavor in there. Maybe a little bit of black cherry in there also. Finishes thick and chewey and sweet. A great brew but needs a little while to soften up. Glad I have one fo these to lay down for a while.
