Commercial Description:
The brewer has produced an homage to the General’s magnificent escape in the spring of 1778. A self-imposed test of his skill and talent, the brewer has (hopefully) created a Belgian-inspired, low-alcohol brew that still has the flavor to match its high-octane brethren. He does warn not to expect a trend, however! 1.9% ABV, 8 IBU

On tap at the GLI. Poured a deeper and muddy brown color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of yeast, dark fruits/cherries, and some chocolate in the background. Tastes of dark fruits (cherries and plums), yeast, and just all around fruity. Thinner body. When I read Low Alcohol, I expected to see a clear yellow beer with non-descript aromas and tastes; all I can say is wow, this was a ’Low Alcohol’ beer. This definitely shows that a Low Alcohol beer can be brewed with a decent aroma and taste.

on tap-pours a thin rich tan head and red color. Aroma is medium malt-caramel, nutty. Taste is medium malt-caramel, nutty/peat/smoky, English hops at mid-taste and after taste. It varies from medium body to watery/thin body.

Poured a hazy brown color with a thin, off white head that left sparce lacing on the glass. Aroma of dried fruits, banana, chocolate, yeast, vanilla, and spices. Taste of dried fruits, notably plums, chocolate, some roast, some citrus fruits, lightly bitter, and a dry yeasty finish. Somewhat thin mouthfeel, but for a 2.8% ale, this is awesome. I read that we shouldn’t expect this as a trend, but Chris, if you’re reading this, this is an awesome LA beer that has nice flavor.

For only being 2.8%, this is rediculouly good. I would guess that this would be anywhere from 5-7%. Pours a medium to dark amber with a nice beige head. Aroma is lightly fruity from the yeast, estery, light apple and plum, raisin, caramel malts, and tea-like. Flavor is moderately sweet with crystal malts and lightly yeasty. Nice clean bitterness in the end. Leaves a good mouthfeel and the body is so much bigger than you would expect for a 2.8% beer.

In short: Maybe the best low-alcohol beer. Kind of bland but not unpleasant.
How: Tap at brewpub
The look: Clear amber body with almost no head
In long: Light nose of barley candy. Taste of basic whole-wheat cereals, some berries, light touch of caramel, a tiny bit nutty. Overall sensation of those morning cereals with dried berries. Not very tasty, it is bland but not offensively bland. Body didn’t feel empty. I’m not one of typical ratebeerian that rates a beer by its intensity, I really enjoyed the 2.5% Goose Island Six (rating 3.7) and the 3.5% Dupont Avril is a mid-4 beer to me, but this Escape really lacked character. It’s certainly the best beer classified as Low-Alcohol I’ve ever had but that means as much as being the best Ethiopian sumo wrestler.

Wow my first low alcohol! Now I just have to find a Faro. This one poured to an amber color with a medium head. Aroma is nutty, malty and somewhat appetizing. Flavor has a light nutty/malty flavor that reminded me of a Mild ale. Not bad - I applaud the effort but just not enough there for my liking.

With most General Lafayette beers coming in over 6% ABV it was refreshing to have a low alcohol offering. Nice malty beer, medium body with crisp flavor. Lafayette’s Escape may be lower in alcohol but it has full flavor I expect from a GLI beer.

From the tap poured a clear brown color with a small amount of head. Nice flavor malty, but kind of watery.
