Commercial Description:
Ancient brewers sought potency in their beers, and Golden City’s Centurion Barleywine Ale satisfies this tradition. Twice the malt and hops and a cellaring period of many months yields an ale unlike any other.

12 oz bottle. Pours a murky amber brown with a small off white head that quickly diminishes to a thin collar.

The aroma is nutty caramel malts, chocolate, molasses, candy sugar, fruits and a little tobacco. It’s very decadent.

The flavor is similar to the nose - sweet nutty caramel malts, chocolate, dark fruits and pineapple, and some alcohol, with a medium roasted bitter finish. The mouthfeel medium bodied and watery with very little carbonation.

Overall, a very nice malt heavy barelywine that’s got some nice complexities. I only wish it was better carbonated.

12 ounce bottle from College Liquors, you never know what you’ll find there. Pours a deep mahogany color with a small white head and some patchy sticky lacing. A super sweet nose; strawberries, sugary, toffee, burnt caramel. A strong fruity flavor; sweet strawberries, light bitter hops- or perhaps tart fruit- some toffee and caramel. Overall, sweet and kind of tart. Nice. Not very hot at all.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a thin head, over a slightly cloudy, amber (SRM 16) body....nose is toffee, caramel, bit of hop.....taste is heavy sweet malts, with toffee and caramel dominating, then some raisin/fig tones, finishing with a fairly sharp, almost woody, hop sharpness......mouth feel is thick and chewy, the tiny bubbled carbonation adds to the experience. Although not the most complex Barley Wine I have tasted, this is by far the best beer I have had from this Brewery.

12oz bottle from Total Beverage. Pours murky medium brown small tan head. Aroma is loaded with sweet malt, caramel and faint hops. Flavor is heavy with sweet malt with hops, caramel, booze, dark fruits, and a touch of citrus and pine. A little to sweet and boozy but not to bad.

Crushed with Jakebra and Honkeybra at Falling Rock. Sweet nose, some hops, some honey. Very sweet malt with minimal hops. It’s interesting. Not bad. Alcohol is apparent, but not offensive. This is just an average barley wine.

12oz bottle shared by Eugene at my last BW tasting. Thanks! Clear honey golden with a thinning fizzy head. Aroma is sweet yet stale caramel malts, light peachy and apricot fruits with some green raisin. Brown sugar in the flavor with some vegetal, acetaldehyde, green apple, some caramel sweetness, toasted malts and a bit stale and oxidized.

Shared by I think Eugene. Sweet, crummy aroma, biscuit, old hops. Flavor is sweet and very oxidized. Toasty and quite gross. Way past its peak. This may have been vintage.

Sample from a bottle. Mostly clear light bourbon colored brown with a small, thin head. Striking nose of dried apricots, grapes, plums and a heavy load of sharp caramel and maple. Alcohol easily noticed, but just below what I would call hot. Bitter up front, some maple and bourbon notes develop over the middle, along with more of this dried apricot and raisin bread flavor. Not exactly harsh but quite bitter, and warming throughout, with a boozy bourbon and caramel malt finish.
