rosenbergh (843), Helsinki, Finland Jul 27, 2009 355 ml bottle. Finland.
Dark almost black colour with small white head. Dark roasted malts, chocolate and some alcohol in aroma. Quite fascinating flavour with weak coffee, chocolate, sweetness, alcohol and vanilla. Somewhat liqueur-like. FatPhil (3443), Espoo, Finland Jul 26, 2009 355ml bottle (Kaisla, Helsinki)
Jet black, no head even when poured from a height. Big sweet vanilla aroma - clearly bourbon barrel aged. Soft sweet smooth sticky palate, but with a gentle tingle of carbonation. Vanilla sweet taste is now joined with a really rich roast - burnt, which in context comes over as a lovely dark chocolate. The alcohol is relatively constrained, but definitely there. Finish is again more of the vanilla and sweet roast, with a slightly ashy and stuffy feel to the burntness. Perhaps the best beer I’ve had from the US, even topping 10/50. Borresteijn (1347), Amstelveen, Netherlands Jul 21, 2009 Bottle, kindly shared by Cgarvieuk and Nightfall at RBESG Sheffield 2009 at the Star Inn in Huddersfield. 2006 vintage, 11% ABV. Black in colour, no head (this was a leftover, don’t know if it had any). Aroma is very sweet, liquorice, whiskey, soy sauce. Flavour is very sweet, bourbon, vanilla, some liquorice, soy sauce, bit of chocolate. Too sweet for my taste, but glad to have had the chance to try this. Thanks Craig/Alex! thelizard (27), Canton, Ohio, USA Jul 18, 2009 On tap at the Clybourn GI brewpub. Pours straight black with a thick brown head. Standard stout aroma. Taste was 110% chocolate. Thick as hell, and just wonderful. Practically a dessert. Skeegle (476), Maryland, USA Jul 16, 2009 Wow holy crap was this thing thick as hell. Honestly I like my heavy beers to burn and churn the flavors into the palate and I felt that this one had so much to offer in terms of flavor complexity but not the harshness to fully bloom all of them. Probably the maltiest beer ever, copious amounts of sugared split wheat and heavy chocolate/espresso on the after swallow. Thick thick thick, a true motor oil beer if ever there was one. Great beer, deserved of its world-rating because of what it is and how well it does everything BIGgly, but I would never be able to drink more than one of these pups. So glad I got to try it. Lagunitasfan (432), San Diego, California, USA Jul 15, 2009 12 oz bottle 2007 vintage. Black black black thick oil black with a tiny dark caramel brown head and ring. The milky way of lace is swirling around the black universe. Nose is booze and cocoa/chocolate and raisins and vanilla and I’m in love. Brown sugar and caramel. Lovely. Taste is cocoa and malt and booze. Nose burn from the alcohol. Bitter afters. Getting too much alcohol overpowering a lot of it. Sweet dark fruit comes through in the beginning. Super gooey sticky loogy making in the back of my throat. Have to decide later how good I think it is. emoore0024 (25), USA Jul 14, 2009 Pours dark very dark. Thin Tan head. Full of flavors Oak, Carmel, Java, Vanilla. Awesome beer. austone (998), Turku; Pori, Finland Jul 12, 2009 2008 bottle @ Kukko, Turku. Black (sic) with a tiny tanned head. Very smooth and oaky nose, molasses, natural buttery vanilla ice-cream. Flavor starts with madeira like fruits along with oak, some earthy liquorice, molasses, faint tar, menthol and cheap cologne. It’s huge, but still drinkable. Roasted ryebread and bitter cocoa finish, alcohol shows here. Massively thick, mouthfilling palate, like real hot chocolate. Nowhere near perfect, though this might age so well. Now it got very one dimensional after a few sips.
