Bradrcr (778), Renton, Washington, USA Mar 6, 2009 3/6/09 From 2008 bottle. Aroma is inncredibly rich, with dark fruit skins(plums), molasses and tobacco. Appearance is black with a very low brown head. Flavor is just as rich, with big sweet molasses, moderate earthy bittering and an alcoholic finish. Mouthfeel is full bodied, syrupy, slightly warm, with almost no carb texture. Overall, a very big cool beer with about as much complexity as you can find. oteyj (713), Canterbury, New Hampshire, USA Mar 6, 2009 Updated: Jun 17, 2009Pours like filthy motor oil and zero head. Dark and foreboding. Bourbon punishes my nostrils before the initial sniff. Dark fruit abounds with huge roasty notes and a bourbon kick. Wood, roast, and manliness can best describe this robust specimen. Flavor is vanilla, copious roast, dark fruit sweetness and bourbon balance. Hard to ascribe a nomenclature to this incredible fashioned delicatessen. Palate is as thick as can be- lingering, thick, heavy, silky, and expertly balanced. Dear Christ this brew is good- it’s truly on its very own level. craftycarl21 (510), South Hero, Vermont, USA Mar 6, 2009 pours a flat out motor oil with no head whatsoever. Aroma is heavy with alcohol, bourbon, fig, raisin, vanilla, caramel- exquisite. Flavor is unbelievable- starts with heavy cream and caramel notes, then the sticky sweet dark fruit notes come through, with an incredible finish of wood, cream, vanilla, and cane sugar. Phenomenal palate, a candy of a beer, incredible. bigtaster (184), Grand Rapids, USA Mar 5, 2009 Pours tar black with no head, some dark brown hues. Nose is tremendous with burst of malty fruit, raisin, also hint of some tongue bruising hops. Most notable is the immediate smoothness that is uncommon in a beer on this size. The hit of sweet malt brings molasses, and dark chocolate to the forefront, as the sip finishes a tingling covers the palate. As the malty sweetness slowly melts off the tongue the bitterness becomes more prevalent in the elongated finish. Wonderful! War4soccer (115), , Nevada, USA Mar 5, 2009 Very Strong beer, slip this or share.. Very different then most stouts.. Bourbon is strong and solid throughout!..good beer GreggG (19), Spokane, Washington, USA Mar 4, 2009 12 oz. bottle dated November 28, 2008. A strong bourbon aroma blasts from the bottle as soon as the cap is popped. Behind the bourbon are hints of chocolate, oak, vanilla, and alcohol (it is 13% ABV, after all).
The appearance is jet black with a creamy brown head and very little carbonation. No light is able to penetrate the beer, even around the rim.
The flavor of the bourbon is most prominent, followed by chocolate, molasses, smoke, vanilla, and oak. Some heat from the high ABV is evident as the beer flows down the throat. The mouthfeel is thick and syrupy and coats the inside of the cheeks - delicious!
I am amazed at the intensity of the bourbon flavors that are achieved after only 100 days in the barrel. This is a fantastic beer - I wish I’d picked up a few more for the cellar. tdcritch (112), Missouri, USA Mar 4, 2009 Bottle. Very dark black. Creamy Head. Smells of roasted malts, bourbon, oak, and caramel. You can tell its 13% garmonbozia (225), Hattiesburg, Mississippi, USA Mar 3, 2009 Bottle thanks to Sprinkle Color was pitch black. smell was of course bourbon, chocolate and molasses.
