Commercial Description:
"I really wanted to do something special for our 1000th batch at the original brewpub. Goose Island could have thrown a party. But we did something better. We brewed a beer. A really big batch of stout-so big the malt was coming out of the top of the mash tun. After fermentation we brought in some bourbon barrels to age the stout. One hundred and fifty days later, Bourbon County Stout was born-A liquid as dark and dense as a black hole with a thick foam the color of bourbon barrels. The nose is a mix of charred oak, vanilla, carmel and smoke. One sip has more flavor than your average case of beer. It overpowers anything in the room. People have even said that it’s a great cigar beer, but I haven’t yet tried a cigar that would stand up to it." Brewmaster Greg Hall; IBU’s 60-High Color - Midnight Was 11%, the 2007 and 2008 are listed at 13%.

After first spotting the Bourbon County Stout on ratebeer, I had to wait almost a year before I got my hands on one (and I even went to the Goose Island brewery in Chicago--it was out that day!). Well, when I finally drank this highly-anticipated beer, it was one of those rare occasions when all good things in life converge and the soul feels at peace. Whatever, I was feeling in love that night, so I had goo-goo eyes for everything, but I can honestly say that this beer was fantastic. The bourbon smell and taste really hold up, and you can’t argue with 13%. Hell, I can’t argue with anything about this beer. Tops!

Thanks to ghawener. Drank it at El Flor for New Years Eve. Wow. Talk about a potent brew. Take it easy and slowly with this one. More like a port wine than a stout. Extremely sweet, caramel, not very smoky or peaty. Yes is more like a dessert wine.

12oz bottled 10/8/08 from Archer Liquors. Pours a very thick, jet black, with a whispy dark chocolate brown head that quickly fades leaving no lace. aroma came blasting from the glass with big, oaked bourbon notes up front that slowly mellow into roasted coffee, chocolate, and smoke. on the first sip...wow. this is a massive brew. starts out like the first sip of Woodford Reserve with flavors of oak, vanilla, and burnt grain. Flavors of roasted coffee, dark chocolate, toffee, and a hint of sweetness balance the bourbon flavors beautifully. Flavors are quite complex and with a lasting bourbon finish. Palate is full bodied, thick, and velvety smooth and a substantial warming quality making this a great winter stout. Overall, one of the best stouts I’ve ever had and perfect if you’re a beer geek who also happens to enjoy quality bourbon.

12 oz bottle (vintage 2007) at Stockholm Beer Festival 2008. Pitch black with small head. Strong sweet and perfumed bourbon aroma with vanilla, salty licorice and dark chocolate. Rich sweet chocolate and bourbon flavor with vanilla, salty licorice and some grainy notes. Some coffee and charcoal towards finish. Very warming. Good strong bourbon character but not overpowering.

One of the darkest (in flavour), fatest and most generous beers I have tried so far. Here’s a extreme amount of flavour, lots of bourbon both on the nose and the palate alongside a big sweetness that is still balanced out by very non-noticable hops. Extremely tasty and stylish beer that, if something is a bit one-dimensional.

12 oz 2008 bottle pours, and feels like, warm motor oil. Bourbon dominates aroma and is strong in flavor. Body is viscous and carbonation is enough to balance. Besides bourbon, there’s barley malt syrup flavors with notes of vanilla bean extract, alcohol and oak. Finish runs overtime.
