Commercial Description:
"I really wanted to do something special for our 1000th batch at the original brewpub. Goose Island could have thrown a party. But we did something better. We brewed a beer. A really big batch of stout-so big the malt was coming out of the top of the mash tun. After fermentation we brought in some bourbon barrels to age the stout. One hundred and fifty days later, Bourbon County Stout was born-A liquid as dark and dense as a black hole with a thick foam the color of bourbon barrels. The nose is a mix of charred oak, vanilla, carmel and smoke. One sip has more flavor than your average case of beer. It overpowers anything in the room. People have even said that it’s a great cigar beer, but I haven’t yet tried a cigar that would stand up to it." Brewmaster Greg Hall; IBU’s 60-High Color - Midnight Was 11%, the 2007 and 2008 are listed at 13%.

POURS THICK AND DARK AS OIL. YOU CAN TASTE THE VANILLA AND OAK WITH HINTS OF BUTTER. VERY STRONG BEER. THE ALCOHOL CONTENT IS A LITTLE STRONG. THIS BEER IS VERY DIFFERENT THE WARMER IT GETS THE MORE THE FLAVORS COME OUT.

Lot’s of sediment in bottle. At first pours zero head, though it does foam up to about a quarter inch in height, albeit falling fairly quickly. Absolutely wonderful bourbon aromas when sticking nose deep in the glass. Flavors of brown sugar, cherry and vanilla. Not necessarily tasting the smoke, but that doesn’t matter as its fantastic as is. Body is just heavy enough on the tongue. Any thinner and it would have lost its charactor. Any thicker and it would have been a chore to drink. Only slightly warming on the palate. May just have to go back to Ledger’s and pick up a four pack to put away.

Very stout, very imperial. The alcohol is right up front and this beer tasted a little too much like bourbon and a not quite enough like stout. It is good, and complex, but as such, I’m not really enthralled by it. Bottle from Ledger Liquors Berkeley.

12oz bottle, 2005 vintage from 08/16/2005, nose is HUGE pour is nice and black only letting light in on the edge, but the taste is hot alcoholic and smoke, there is some redemption here though, vanilla and oak like a good bourbon.. nice but just too much for me... And man, its still packs a punch

2008 Bottle. Pours a deep, inky black with a tan head that fades to a ring. Rich aroma of bourbon, sweet malt, molasses, wood, and alcohol. Intense taste, of bourbon, wood, malt, dark fruits, molasses, an alcohol bite, and some chocolate at the end. Lingering bourbon and wood flavors. Very rich and delicious.

2008 vintage on December 31, 2008. Well, before its aroma attacked me from an arms length my first impression was how much this resembled dirty oil. Thats a good sign. Its small, perfectly shaded head could only be improved by being a *little* larger. But I’m still scoring its appearance a 5. Now, back to its aroma. This sucker is potent. It makes the whole room glisten in aromatic nirvana the moment you pop the cap. Its smell... like you opened a bottle of bourbon. It has awesome alcoholic fumes, heavy enough to really grab you by the heart and pull you down into its grave of tasty dreams. Sweet, sticky, and oh so warm. Something in this almost reminds me of a triple bock... but its so much better. Simply amazing.
