Commercial Description:
"I really wanted to do something special for our 1000th batch at the original brewpub. Goose Island could have thrown a party. But we did something better. We brewed a beer. A really big batch of stout-so big the malt was coming out of the top of the mash tun. After fermentation we brought in some bourbon barrels to age the stout. One hundred and fifty days later, Bourbon County Stout was born-A liquid as dark and dense as a black hole with a thick foam the color of bourbon barrels. The nose is a mix of charred oak, vanilla, carmel and smoke. One sip has more flavor than your average case of beer. It overpowers anything in the room. People have even said that it’s a great cigar beer, but I haven’t yet tried a cigar that would stand up to it." Brewmaster Greg Hall; IBU’s 60-High Color - Midnight Was 11%, the 2007 and 2008 are listed at 13%.

[Bottled] Pitch black. Very brief head. Vinous aroma. Loads of oak, vanilla and some sweet berry. Thick and oily palate. Strong alco-feel. Pretty sweetish with fruity notes. Tar and licorice. Extremely many flavours.

The pour is black with a dark brown head. The aroma is rich in the smell of whiskey, chocolate, coffee, some vanilla and caramel. Thee taste taste is out of this world, vanilla, chocolate, coffee, a little smokey and a woody or bourbon/whiskey flavor.

Wow! That was the only beer I had that night - it was huge. Plenty of vanilla, esspresso and bourbon to please the senses. Just opening the bottle gave me pause as sweet aromas saturated the air, cloaking me in an unexpected euphoria. What a treat. I will have to try more bourdon aged beer.

Bottle from Ledgers Liquors in Berkeley for $4.99. By the way, if you are in the Bay Area, go there. Wow. This is a seriously good beer. It pours pitch black and oily with a very thin head but nice lacing. The sweet aroma has brown sugar, nuts, vanilla, some wood, and a hint of alcohol. The palate is exceedingly smooth, full, and creamy with little carbonation. The flavor really makes sense following the aromas, which I cant say for very many beers. It complements the aromas. There is a stronger presence of coffee than I had imagined, but also wood, caramel, chocolate, and of course the motif of bourbon. The alcohol is a little more noticeable in the flavor than in the nose, but still belies the 13 percent a.b.v. unlike in most barley wine style beers. I definitely get nice smooth notes of bourbon that really enhance the beer. I feel like there could be slightly more carbonation and more head, but the palate is excellent on this beer. Overall this beer is balanced and great for drinking on a rainy winter day such as this one.

2008 12 oz single bought in Salem Oregon $4.50 a bottle. Great brown sugar, espresso coffee, vanilla and wood aromas vVery dark brown almost black beer, creamy light brown head. Flavour is similar to the aroma, but more alcoholic.Bourbon really shows. The mouthfeel is the greatest thing about this beer, thick, silky ,creamy like a good quality milk shake! Good beer indeed. But i prefered Full Sails Bourbon Barrel beers better.

Oj oj oj...

Unbelievable. If I can find a better stout than this, I am going to marry it. Pours a beautiful deep chocolate/coffee hue with a thick, creamy canvas colored head. Nose full of caramel, coffee, toffee, toast, whisky, oak, and a hint of smoke for character. Flavors of chocolate, coffee, licorice, floral bourbon, caramel, and toffee all balanced for a gorgeous, full-bodied beer. Sorry Rochefort 10, there is another woman in the relationship...

Wow!! This is pitch black in color. Dark brown head. This is intense. The flavor of the bourbon is obvious as well as some oak. Not for the faint of heart, but this is just fantastic, definitely worth the $20 a four-pack.
