Commercial Description:
"I really wanted to do something special for our 1000th batch at the original brewpub. Goose Island could have thrown a party. But we did something better. We brewed a beer. A really big batch of stout-so big the malt was coming out of the top of the mash tun. After fermentation we brought in some bourbon barrels to age the stout. One hundred and fifty days later, Bourbon County Stout was born-A liquid as dark and dense as a black hole with a thick foam the color of bourbon barrels. The nose is a mix of charred oak, vanilla, carmel and smoke. One sip has more flavor than your average case of beer. It overpowers anything in the room. People have even said that it’s a great cigar beer, but I haven’t yet tried a cigar that would stand up to it." Brewmaster Greg Hall; IBU’s 60-High Color - Midnight Was 11%, the 2007 and 2008 are listed at 13%.

Aroma of chocolate, coffee, alcohol, old wood. Taste of BOURBON, chocolate, vanilla, malt, dark fruit, slight burn of alcohol. And yes, chocolate and vanilla are not mutually exclusive. Chewy. I never understood why people say ‘chewy’ about a beer, but I do now. The bubbles struggle to get to the top of this thick beer. I wish it had a little more head, but otherwise this stout is perfect. Really. Definitely a sipper, make it last.

12 ounce bottle in small tulip. Black with no head and no bubbles whatsoever. Flatter than Ashley Tisdale. Chocolate aroma buried in bourbon and alcohol. Chocolate and dark fruit overrun with bourbon and alcohol. Mildly bitter lingering finish with alcohol burn. Full body, no carbo. Might have been good if it had some carbo to let the alcohol and bourbon effervesce. I’ll try it again, but I gotta call ’em as I drink ’em, especially at $6.49 for a twelve ounce domestic. Unpleasant and irritating. Not sure why they would put a beer like this into a twist-top bottle. rerate: Tried this again on tap at Blind Tiger: It was exactly as described above: Like bourbon mixed with chocolate flavored prune juice. Nasty.

Rerate: Have to rate this one on tap (much better). Served at Sheffields bar (chicago, IL). Served in a tulip at perfect temperature. The fluffy head has 3 finger height, and the lacing clings like glue. The aromas are mind boggling, as you know exactly what is about to happen. The intial explosion of bourbon and oak is a little unbalanced, however, 1/10 of a second later it melds perfectly into the complex beer. The alcohol lends a helping hand, and dances down the throat. However, 60 IBU’s doesn’t do it justice.

Dirty brown oil like black pour. Ruby red around the edges and a larger brown head than I was expecting, with carbonation throughout. Probably because this is a bit fresh explains the bubbles. Big roast malt, mocha, caramel, boozy aroma. Smoother up front than some Imperials, flowing nicely throughout. Great array of flavors. Caramel, mocha, roast malt, oak, raisin ending with some molasses and a hint of coffee bitter. Some hop balancing throughout, but not a real strong presence. Very full bodied and sticky. Alcohol almost completely hidden, shows up more as it warms. This was really well done, better than I was expecting for being so new. Good thing I have 6 more of these.

It finally made its way to San Diego! And it is everything I heard it was. Pours midnight black, with a short tan head. Rich, full aroma of choclate dipped in bourbon and wrapped in leather. The taste is soooooooo good. Chocolate and roasty malt topped with caramel. More bourbon and oak with hints of smoke, vanilla, and coffee. The prevalence of the alcohol only enhances the flavors. I love you Bourbon County Stout.

This beer is so crazy wonderful and intense.. Pours rich and black, with a swirling tan head. Armoa: Dark chocolate, vanilla, coffee roast, booze, dark fruit, black licorice, oak, man what a wonderful nose on this beer. The flavor is potent blend of chocolate, bourbon, striking black patent malt roastiness, coffee, as well as some obvious alcohol heat- this bad boy is a wonderful sipper at 13abv, and ranks up there will all of the world class imperial stouts up there! Who knows what a few years will do to this great creation.. Well done Greg- A home run!!

So glad ratebeer.com is back up! I don’t know if I will ever forget this one. I’ve never tried an imperial stout that I wanted to take deep long drinks from rather than sip. So rich and sweet and smooth and silky. Black as night with the thinnest brown head. Aroma of charred wood, chocolate, and maybe some kind of caramel? Flavor is almost fruity - syrupy sweet with just a hint of subtle bitterness. A rich dark toffee sweetness... so friggen good!

Tap at the brewpub in Clybourn. Pours an almost pitch black with a small mocha head. Aroma is heavy on alcohol and oak. Flavor is rich and powerful, with loads of roasted malts, cocoa and coffee, with a surprisingly mellow woodiness coming through. Vanilla and peaty bourbon notes round it out. Significant alcohol, but not in a harsh way. No one flavor is dominating; rather, they all blend together into one balanced flavor. All I can say is amazing.
