Commercial Description:
"I really wanted to do something special for our 1000th batch at the original brewpub. Goose Island could have thrown a party. But we did something better. We brewed a beer. A really big batch of stout-so big the malt was coming out of the top of the mash tun. After fermentation we brought in some bourbon barrels to age the stout. One hundred and fifty days later, Bourbon County Stout was born-A liquid as dark and dense as a black hole with a thick foam the color of bourbon barrels. The nose is a mix of charred oak, vanilla, carmel and smoke. One sip has more flavor than your average case of beer. It overpowers anything in the room. People have even said that it’s a great cigar beer, but I haven’t yet tried a cigar that would stand up to it." Brewmaster Greg Hall; IBU’s 60-High Color - Midnight Was 11%, the 2007 and 2008 are listed at 13%.

i agree with the commercial description completely, other than i thought it was maybe a little undercarbonated.

12 oz bottle from zinister. Pours a dark black with a small tan head that soon fades to nothing. The aroma is big with bourbon whiskey and dark fruits. The flavor is likewise dominated by bourbon whiskey (close to Old Grand Dad), also filling in the sides are licorice plums, and dates. The mouthfeel is full and creamy. The finish is exceptionally long with lingering whiskey. Overall: I’m discovering that I am a big fan of whiskey barrel aged ales, they just sit right with me.

2007 12.0 coutesy of Whole Foods beer room. No head, strong (strong) bourbon flavors, mainly left in the back of your mouth, but delicate espresso flavors as well.

Updated Rating 4/9/09: 12 oz. bottle - 2007 vintage; 3rd time trying this, thanks to WeeHeavySD for this bottle and chance to revisit; pours thin, jet black with trace dark brown head; 90% bourbon aroma mixed with brunt malt, chocolate; super thin body, boozy, sweet; i’d say it’s official that i don’t really get the appeal here; just another impy that has been way too heavily bourbon-barreled

Original Rating 7/10/08 (3.3 overall) 12 oz. bottle - 2007 vintage; thanks to pepsican for the trade; pours thin and oily black; almost no head; slight chocolate haze around the edges leaving residue on the glass; boozy across the board; drinks sweet and slightly hot; woody vanilla in the flavors; bourbon is overpowering and for me, doesn’t come close to something like KBS; pretty disappointing

2004 bottle courtesy of Tony @ OTH. Pours absolute black, nose is liquorish. Aroma is very roasty with a strong presence of coffee / chocolate malts and this ever presence of light bourbon wood. An outstanding imperial stout.
