ThaBobfather (178), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA May 26, 2008 I gave this to my friend and he thought he was actually just drinking bourbon.
Great aroma, the motor oil black pour is amazing. The bourbon tastes is close to over powering, but keeps it enough at bay to enjoy this sipping beer. patrick767 (2016), fort wayne, Indiana, USA May 25, 2008 2007 bottle - Pours black and oily with a thin tan head. The aroma is of bourbon and roast malt with vanilla notes. The flavor has very apparent bourbon, but it doesn’t overwhelm the big roast malts and the coffee and vanilla accents. It’s full bodied and very tasty. I’d vote for dialing back the bourbon just a little bit, but it’s an excellent brew. BabyJoe692 (109), Pickerington, Ohio, USA May 24, 2008 Draft. Pitch Black in color. Aroma of burbon. Good tasting stout with a great flavor of burbon. msears (10), chicago, Illinois, USA May 24, 2008 Excellent beer, but overpriced in my opinion. I loved how the bourbon kicked you in the teeth and then the subtle nuances of the stout crept into the aftertaste. At $20 a 4 pack though... GAManiac (1123), Atlanta, Georgia, USA May 23, 2008 Pours pitch black with very little head and mahogany hints when held up to light. The aroma certainly doesn’t betray the name as the bourbon makes itself known in the aroma with a definite alcohol burn in the nose. Some malt and smoke in the smell as well with a faint hint of sweetness from caramel and chocolate. It’s really about the bourbon here. Initial sweet malt flavor with caramel, vanilla and chocolate is quickly blown away by a massive bourbon blast. The finish is slightly bitter with coffee and smoked wood and leaves a serious aftertaste that lingers for a while. Despite the alcohol presence, the mouthfeel is extremely creamy and smooth with a nice carbonation complement. This beer has too much booze to be seriously drinkable, though the mouthfeel belies the bourbon dominance. I like this one but the bourbon is just a bit overpowering for my liking. hombrepalo (745), Chicago, Illinois, USA May 22, 2008 Updated: Dec 12, 200812 oz bottle, finally! Wow this is a fine ass beer... Impressively done, silky smooth, tasty, gentle, rich and so on so on. Pours like motor oil, dark black with a slight head the comes well after the pour and dissipates quickly, minimal lacing. Aroma of warm alcohol/bourbon, oak, dark chocolate, malts and just a touch of vanilla. Thick silky taste with oak, molasses, caramel, alcohol and roasted malts. Lovely brew, bourbon doesn’t dominate, but just adds background complexity to a beer that would have been excellent anyway. Loved it! Go Cubbies! beerheart (237), Erie, Colorado, USA May 20, 2008 Just phenomenal. I don’t know if words can describe it. You just know when you’re in the presence of greatness. And this one you can tell from the aroma. The malt, the caramel, the full body, all aged in a bourbon barrel. Raisins, vanilla, caramel, brown sugar, deep brown color, bourbon aftertaste. This is one great beer. I added one to my cellar. mcferc4 (55), New Jersey, USA May 20, 2008 Poured, as expected, a thick, oily black. Amazing -- so full bodied, heavy roast on aroma and taste. You can almost chew this brew -- better than Dark Lord IMHO. Lots of chocolate, roasted coffee, vanilla, and vinous notes. Bourbon touch is just right, not too much and not too little. Alcohol is there, but isn’t overwhelming. Sweet, endless finish: it coats the mouth and tongue with sweet nectar. Love this one.
