Commercial Description:
"I really wanted to do something special for our 1000th batch at the original brewpub. Goose Island could have thrown a party. But we did something better. We brewed a beer. A really big batch of stout-so big the malt was coming out of the top of the mash tun. After fermentation we brought in some bourbon barrels to age the stout. One hundred and fifty days later, Bourbon County Stout was born-A liquid as dark and dense as a black hole with a thick foam the color of bourbon barrels. The nose is a mix of charred oak, vanilla, carmel and smoke. One sip has more flavor than your average case of beer. It overpowers anything in the room. People have even said that it’s a great cigar beer, but I haven’t yet tried a cigar that would stand up to it." Brewmaster Greg Hall; IBU’s 60-High Color - Midnight Was 11%, the 2007 and 2008 are listed at 13%.

Bottle. Pitch black, brown head. Bourbon aroma, malty, vanilla, whiskty, vinous, smoked, tar, viol, licorice, milky and creamy notes, roasted and with oak notes. Bourbon flavor, oak, wood, vanilla, tar, sweetish, some almond, oily, tarmilky smoked and rather roasted, almost burnt notes. Whisky finish that lasts forever and also brings some bitterness. 13 percent and no alcohol showing. I love it!

Many thanks to tjthresh for sending this one my way. Pours opaque with spare fizzy brown head, diminishing with spare lacing. I was a bit disappointed in the lack of head. Aroma is heavy malt (molasses, caramel, coffee, toasted grain), average hops (perfume), average yeast (dough, fresh leather) with notes of average alcohol, prunes and smoke. The aroma is very inviting and the alcohol is just noticeable but not overwhelming; nice maltiness that balances everything else. Average duration, heavy sweetness partly imparted by the bourbon and partly by a hint of vanilla, harsh acidity accentuated by the alcohol, heavy bitterness. Full bodied, alcoholic texture, average carbonation and bitter finish. The alcohol is very apparent in the flavor and mouthfeel yet remains less dominant in the aroma.

Bottle 2003 vintage poured an inky black with a small but long lasting brown head. Aromas of bourbon, oak, coffee, dark chocolate, and a hint of some vinous notes. Palate was heavy bodied, but smooth and slightly creamy. Flavors of bourbon, dark chocolate, vanilla, and coffee with a slightly bitter warming finish. An amazing beer in my never to be humble opinion!

12 oz bottle. Thick black with a thick tan head. Taste is oily and sweet with all of the good things you want in the style. Rich, deep flavors of coffee and chocolate are cut with a strong bourbon flavor. Some coconut and vanilla are in there also. This is right up there with the best. A real cocktail. Nicely done.

Bottle shared with and courtesy of HogTownHarry -- my hero! Pours black as the devil’s heart with a small diminishing tan head. Aroma is of, well, bourbon barrels and it smells friggin’ great! There’s also some malt, smoke, alcohol and maybe even some chocolate in there. Hold on I’m going to smell this some more. Oh yeah. To my surprise the flavour’s even better! Oh man that’s tasty. There’s bourbon of course, roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, some burnt notes, hops, alcohol and more -- it’s quite complex. Full bodied with a sticky mouthfeel. A truly unique and flavourful Stout -- fantastic!

2007 bottle and bottled on this date - 101207 and thanks to bdigi66 for giving me this bottle. Poured thick and syrupy and a very, very small light brown head that fully lasted, virtually no lacing, opaque, no signs of carbonation, and a black as oil hue. The aroma was vanilla, bourbon, dark malts, wood, oak, roasty, caramel and smoke notes. Nice!! The flavor wood, acidic, licorice, roasty, vanilla, bourbon, dark malts, thick, and a long finish. The mouthfeel was thick, syrupy and an alcohol burn in the back of the throat. Full bodied. Wow what a brew! Delicious, nicely done, nice balance, definitely worthy of a try! Thanks again, bdigi66!!

Thanks to hatchy for picking this from my wants list up for me during his travels to Chicago. Pours a deep motor oil black with a medium creamy/bubbly deep tan head that left some bubbly lacing. Aroma of vanilla, bourbon, woody, roasted malts, dark chocolate dipped cherries, hints of oxidation and hints of smoke. Flavor of vanilla, nuts, roasted malts, dark chocolate, lingering smokiness, some bourbon, cherries. Really like how the flavor lingers into a roasty/toasted malt sweetness. Alcohol well hidden by all the malty sweetness. A top Imp Stout!

Bottle. Sent by JCW via a trade. Pours used motor oil black with a bit of dark brown around the edge. Nose is wonderful! Bourbon, wood, light vanilla, molasses, roasted malts, dark chocolate, and light hints of brownies. Taste is rich and full. Lots of bourbon flavors and wood with vanilla, light molasses, coffee, dark chocolate, roasted malts, and alcohol. This is light a bourbon soaked chocolate cake. Delicious beer! Body is smooth and gives a mild alcohol warmth. Moderate carbonation feel as well. Finishes much like it began - bourbon notes, wood, vanilla, molasses, dark choco notes, and brownies. The alcohol shows up a bit more in the finish, but it compliments this beer nicely. Great stuff and I have to thank JCW again for the one. I waited a long time to try this, almost without hope, until John basically sprang it on me! Thanks again!
