Commercial Description:
"I really wanted to do something special for our 1000th batch at the original brewpub. Goose Island could have thrown a party. But we did something better. We brewed a beer. A really big batch of stout-so big the malt was coming out of the top of the mash tun. After fermentation we brought in some bourbon barrels to age the stout. One hundred and fifty days later, Bourbon County Stout was born-A liquid as dark and dense as a black hole with a thick foam the color of bourbon barrels. The nose is a mix of charred oak, vanilla, carmel and smoke. One sip has more flavor than your average case of beer. It overpowers anything in the room. People have even said that it’s a great cigar beer, but I haven’t yet tried a cigar that would stand up to it." Brewmaster Greg Hall; IBU’s 60-High Color - Midnight Was 11%, the 2007 and 2008 are listed at 13%.

Thanks to Joebrew for sharing. I appreciate the quality of this beer but the bourbon is not for me. There is a powerful bourbon aroma that destroys other aromas that might be there if not for the bourbon. Not as much bourbon as Shipwreck or Dragon’s Milk, but a lot of bourbon anyway. A thick, black, and malty beer underneath the alcohol. There is some malt sweetness and a hint of English style port and wine flavors, but in the aroma the bourbon overwhelms all. I would like to taste this same beer with the bourbon removed.

Black, almost no hrad. Tarry aroma of coffee, anise seeds, raisin, nuts with touches of wood and alkohol. Black coffee and chocolate with a strong barrel character. Wood, nuts, vanilla and cracker, Thick tarry and a bit peppery aftertaste, touches of nuts and wood. This is intense stuff.

Bottle marked October 11, 2007; 13%. Fantastic oak aged beer! Thick pour that leaves a minimally sized light brown head that turns in to a ring quite quickly, but leaves a nice thin line of lacing. Pitch black body. Aroma of burbon, oak, chocolate, caramel, and some roasted nuts. Wow, that tastes good!, Rich and chocolatey, with vanilla and boozy, burbon goodness! Syrupy-creamy mouthfeel that is nearly flat carbonation wise. Leaves a bit of a dry, cedar-oaky aftertaste/mouthfeel. Really Really nice!

Bottle. 2008 Vintage. Black beer with ruby highlights and a small tan head. Bourbon and chocolate aroma over rich malt. Rich malt flavor with bourbon, light roast, vanilla, and ccaramel. Fuller bodied. Malt and brown sugar lingers with bourbon and vanilla. Very nice, Complex and nicely balanced. Alcohol present and lingers in a comfortable sipping beer way.

2006 bottle, I don’t remember who sent me this, but whoever you are, thanks! Good aroma of bourbon, wood, chocolate and roasted malt. Very good flavor of roasted malt, chocolate, wood with strong, lingering sweetness. The body is light to medium with a liquorous texture and moderate carbonation.

Pours a viscous black color with a thin and fizzy dark brown head that vanishes quickly. Roasted malt and bourbon in the nose. Thick and chewy mouthfeel with roasted malt and sweet caramel flavors offset by the bourbon. Very warming from beginning to end. The finish is chocolatey with a smokey flourish. Easily the best Goose Island beer I have tried.

Pours a very thick black with just a thin light brown head. Very smooth flavor with a excellent blend of bourbon/vanilla/chocolate. Very nice roast to the sweet malts that turn this brew into a perfect dessert for after dinner.

Bottle from Utobeer, 2008 vintage. Almost black with a small brown head. Huge bourbon and vanilla nose. Coffee, bourbon, vanilla, deep alcohol. Soft as velvet. Wonderful.
