Commercial Description:
"I really wanted to do something special for our 1000th batch at the original brewpub. Goose Island could have thrown a party. But we did something better. We brewed a beer. A really big batch of stout-so big the malt was coming out of the top of the mash tun. After fermentation we brought in some bourbon barrels to age the stout. One hundred and fifty days later, Bourbon County Stout was born-A liquid as dark and dense as a black hole with a thick foam the color of bourbon barrels. The nose is a mix of charred oak, vanilla, carmel and smoke. One sip has more flavor than your average case of beer. It overpowers anything in the room. People have even said that it’s a great cigar beer, but I haven’t yet tried a cigar that would stand up to it." Brewmaster Greg Hall; IBU’s 60-High Color - Midnight Was 11%, the 2007 and 2008 are listed at 13%.

12-oz. Thanks, 46er3498! Jet black. A little swirl of brownish, nearly orange head. No visible carb. No lace. Truly a gargantuan chocolate nose. You think someone’s baking fudge. Thick but not sticky body. Hint of velvety carb. Smoke, vanilla and coffee on the mid-palate, especially as the finish takes hold. Mostly chocolate throughout the palate, though. Light smoky bitter finish. Awesome stuff.

Huge thanks to boboski for this bottle of liquid glory.

12oz’er bottled on 07/03/06 consumed about a year later. Dark to darkest pour and thin brown head. I usually take in the aroma before a taste but just the look of this beer overcame me and demanded a sip (I’m weak). Cripes! This luscious a taste shouldn’t be legal. OK, back to the aroma. The nose is pretty darn big with some bourbon, wood, rich coffee mixed with sweet molasses, dark chocolate, burnt malts and brownies swimming in a thin layer of alcohol. This elixir sludges across my palate with a thick ponderous mouth feel. The taste is much like aroma with bourbon, oak and alcohol starting off. Then the sweeter notes arrive with molasses, sweetened coffee then hints of caramel and toffee. Into the finish the burnt flavors build into sort of burnt fudge brownies sensation. Wow, the after taste goes on forever. YUMM!

Thick oily black pour, low dark brown head. Very rich complex aroma and flavours of chocolate, beef broth, whiskey, charred wood, and vanilla. Thick chewy mouthfeel. Medium bitter finish. Alcohol is almost entirely hidden. Absolutely perfect marriage of the ’liquor-and-beer’ concept. Phenomenal. Wow do I ever want more of this!

Very little head; appearance like a World Wide Stout, though lighter in color, can see through the edges a half an inch in. I totally see what Markus said, toasted marshamallow, but also some toasted coconut. Grilled salmon aroma, too. Reasonably smooth, although not intensely so. A little odd, making my jar pucker, but over time it smoothens out and I’m loving the late coconut finish.

Huge maple and whiskey aroma, huge maple and whiskey flavor. Sweet and smooth, big hints of whiskey dwelling within traditional flavors. Vey Nice. Sampled at Ratebeer Southeastern Gathering, Atlanta, 2004.

2006 bottle from iowaherkeye; nose of bourbon, chocolate, coffee, vanilla, oak, and smoke EXTREMELY COMPLEX; Balcker than night with a tiny tan head; thick syrupy body exhumes these flavors, 1) coffee, 2) caramel, 3) chocolate, 4) bourbon, 5) vanilla, and 6) a liitle bitter hop finish! Alcohol extremely well covered!

Small sample @ Brewtopia! Viscous opaque black pour with tan top. Lovely. Slight oxidation throughout gives an extra set of balls. Smooth, creamy and clean--a delight, can’t wait to get my hands on more of this.
