Commercial Description:
"I really wanted to do something special for our 1000th batch at the original brewpub. Goose Island could have thrown a party. But we did something better. We brewed a beer. A really big batch of stout-so big the malt was coming out of the top of the mash tun. After fermentation we brought in some bourbon barrels to age the stout. One hundred and fifty days later, Bourbon County Stout was born-A liquid as dark and dense as a black hole with a thick foam the color of bourbon barrels. The nose is a mix of charred oak, vanilla, carmel and smoke. One sip has more flavor than your average case of beer. It overpowers anything in the room. People have even said that it’s a great cigar beer, but I haven’t yet tried a cigar that would stand up to it." Brewmaster Greg Hall; IBU’s 60-High Color - Midnight Was 11%, the 2007 and 2008 are listed at 13%.

2007 bottle - Pours black and oily with a thin tan head. The aroma is of bourbon and roast malt with vanilla notes. The flavor has very apparent bourbon, but it doesn’t overwhelm the big roast malts and the coffee and vanilla accents. It’s full bodied and very tasty. I’d vote for dialing back the bourbon just a little bit, but it’s an excellent brew.

RBSG Typical of Imperial Stouts, this starts off with a fleeting head of light mocha over a big black oily looking body. Lots of raost malt in the aroma along with some alcohol or bourbon notes. There is a really good Imperial Stout in here, but the Bourbon is a bit too intense at this stage in it’s life for me. A bit of aging may move the bourbon thing a bit more to the back where it will be in better balance and bring this beer up in it’s ratings even further. If you really like the bourbon thing, it’s ready now.

12oz. bottle, July 2006 vintage. Luscious aroma of rich dark chocolate, bittersweet cocoa powder, creamy milk chocolate, sweet vanilla, roasty espresso, plum, toffee, aged, burnt sugars and bourbon-soaked wood. A tempting prelude to what lies ahead. Thickly opaque ebony color with a light brown head forming a ring around the walls of the snifter. Flavor is satisfyingly powerful and robust, with layers of rich chocolate, dark caramel sweetness and maple sugar blended with unfathomable depths of roasty malt, dried fruits, and, towards the incredibly long finish, a brief glimpse of spicy hop bitterness, lingering cola and earthy bourbon barrel accents. Warming, exceedingly smooth, enveloping mouthfeel, body is vast and full. Nicely complex, almost luxurious in nature. Very impressive indeed.

Bottle shared with after4ever. Pours and opaque blackish brown with a tan head. Aroma is full of chocolate. This beer smells more like chocolate that any other stout I’ve ever tried, or as Tom observed "this smells more like chocolate than chocolate. Sweet taste of chocolate, vanilla, licorice, wood and the vaguest hint of coffee. Finishes with bittersweet smoke. Definitely a great desert beer.

Logan’s Stout Tasting: 2005 Bottling. Huge Whiskey, aged malt, smoke, vanilla, and hotness in the nose. Huge Bourbon and vanilla flavors...and I mean HUGE! Chewy vanilla bourbon extravaganze...this is beyond bourbon barrel, this is just bourbon beer mousse. Absolutely spectacular sipper in every way imaginable.

12oz bottle from South Bay Drugs. 2008 bottle, brews pours midnight black with zero head. Tons of bourbon, vanilla, oak and heavily burnt malts. Flavor is very big and full of Vanilla, bourbon and some chocolate. I’m gonna pick up a four pack of this and let it age for sure.

12 oz. bottle via trade with JCapriotti - Pours a dark brown color with a one finger thick tan head. Aroma is chocolate, esters, brown sugar, and oak. Flavor is chocolate, oak, and light vanilla. Medium to full body. Has a slight lingering alcohol aftertaste. The alcohol is noticeable. Very good beer. Thanks Jason.

From a bottle, into my stout glass. Pours very dark, no light seeps through this at all. Small tan head, that doesn’t last long. Strong bourbon aroma. Very thick mouth feel, some hoppiness that fades quickly, to a bourbon, vanilla, coffee finish with a warming sensation from the alcohol as it lingers. Very enjoyable.
