Commercial Description:
"I really wanted to do something special for our 1000th batch at the original brewpub. Goose Island could have thrown a party. But we did something better. We brewed a beer. A really big batch of stout-so big the malt was coming out of the top of the mash tun. After fermentation we brought in some bourbon barrels to age the stout. One hundred and fifty days later, Bourbon County Stout was born-A liquid as dark and dense as a black hole with a thick foam the color of bourbon barrels. The nose is a mix of charred oak, vanilla, carmel and smoke. One sip has more flavor than your average case of beer. It overpowers anything in the room. People have even said that it’s a great cigar beer, but I haven’t yet tried a cigar that would stand up to it." Brewmaster Greg Hall; IBU’s 60-High Color - Midnight Was 11%, the 2007 and 2008 are listed at 13%.

Jet balck pour w/ a dark brown tall small bubbled head w/ nice lacing. Strong bourbon aroma w/ a toffee, butter and roasted malts. Thick well coated creamy palate. Very buttery flavor w/ bourbon toffee and light chocolate. This is nummy.

12 oz bottle at the CL RB gathering. Pours black with a brown head. Aroma is heavy chocolate, bourbon, coffee, and alcohol. Taste is the same, with dark fruits in the taste. Bourbon and a roasty bitterness in the finish.

Bottle in Brooklyn. Pitch black body with slightest and oily head. Dark chocolate nose with caramel and malts. Really filling and nice taste. Again, lots of chocolate, malts and dark fruits. A real delight and worth searching out.

Very black color, small tan head that faded quickly.Roasty, chocolate aroma with hints of alcohol and plums.Wow flavor up the wazoo, kind of thick and syrupy. The flavor is roasted malt and alcoholic with a mild hint of fruit but a nice hit of chocolate and coffee. There is a nice bourbonesque quality to it,and the alcohol really gets in your face. It's IMO not a real gusler but more of a sipper. The after taste is dark with a nice roasty taste and hops bitterness. It will be nice to see how this brew ages and if the alcohol mellows and the flavors come together. At the moment it seems very young and could use a little more time but, that by all means doesn't mean that it's not a good brew. Thanks go out to Iwantalambic for this great brew and the 2nd one as well which i will age for later.

ReRate-Oh man, how my taste has changed. I origonally had this beer at a 3.8 for some reason (thought it was too hot). It seems much more balanced and has amazing complexity. I really dig the woodyness of this beer along with all the char, anise, black patent malt and vanilla. bottle-12/27/03 RB three floyds gathering-thanks to EddieG for bringing this brew into the event! Thick oily black appearance with no head-little carbonation, like bells expedition 02. Very burbon/alcohol/chocolatearome with slight coffee notes tucked under the wiff of bourbon. pretty cool! surupy-chewey palate. Very thick on the toungue. It felt like i had to scrape my toungue after sampling even a small dose. somewhat smokey mid-palate with alcohol coming in the finish. kinda unbalanced, but still pretty cool brew.

2007 – Pitch black, creamy dark tan head. Concentrated warm bourbon and wood aromas flow over deep-rooted charred chocolate coffee, vanilla and caramel notes. Soft toasted coconut tones play out at room temp. Bold bourbon and wood flavors are nicely rounded with further blackened vanilla, chocolate and sweet caramel notes. Nice hop addition late keeps the sweetness somewhat in check. 13% soothes without burn. Full bodied and slick, soft carbonation, bittersweet finish. If you like intense, hit this one fresh. A few years of cellar time though can only make it better…

12 oz. bottle huge thanks to Duane. Pours oil black with a brown head that fades while still analyzing the aroma. Speaking of aroma, huge bourbon as expected. Some dark cherry and molassas too. Chocolate notes as well. Flavor is hot alcohol/bourbon a bunch of ainse. And more bourbon again and all the way through. Good stuff, but I couldn’t drink it too often. There is a reason I drink beer and not bourbon.

An awesome beer on tap at the Malt House in Madison, another Ive been waiting a while to try. Pours a thick thick black colour with a very little brown head. We are talking motor oil thick. On the nose it is strong of oak, smoke, chocolate, burned coffee beans and toast. Taste is rich, incredibly flavourful with notes of all things previously listed. A pleasent treat with a wicked ABV, i thought it was 13% actually. One of the best stouts ive had in a while. 5
