Commercial Description:
"I really wanted to do something special for our 1000th batch at the original brewpub. Goose Island could have thrown a party. But we did something better. We brewed a beer. A really big batch of stout-so big the malt was coming out of the top of the mash tun. After fermentation we brought in some bourbon barrels to age the stout. One hundred and fifty days later, Bourbon County Stout was born-A liquid as dark and dense as a black hole with a thick foam the color of bourbon barrels. The nose is a mix of charred oak, vanilla, carmel and smoke. One sip has more flavor than your average case of beer. It overpowers anything in the room. People have even said that it’s a great cigar beer, but I haven’t yet tried a cigar that would stand up to it." Brewmaster Greg Hall; IBU’s 60-High Color - Midnight Was 11%, the 2007 and 2008 are listed at 13%.

Courtesy of After4ever, thanks Tom for this very nice beer. Vintage 2006 enjoyed December 2008. It is pitch black and it has practically no head. The aroma has notes of vanilla, chocolate, oak and bourbon, it is very well balanced. The flavour has sweetness and a slightly roasted bitterness, notes of chocolate, vanilla, oak, cocoa, caramel, light dark fruit, licorice and bourbon. The alcohol is well hidden, and the body is full, and it is a smooth and harmonic stout.

2007 bottle, 13,1%. Almost black, opague. Roasted malt aroma, indeed with the aroma of bourbon barrels. Full bodied, thick and syrupy mouthfeel. Roasted malt in the flavor with licorice, laurel and burning alcohol. The taste of bourbon is noticeable throughout the stout. Wood and red berries. Sweet but delicious and complex beer, with an astonishing aroma and flavor and a long lasting finish.

A Mes rate: Bottle at Chris_O’s HogTownHarry minifest. Thanks to Harry. Thick opaque black with a slim tan head. Aroma of bourbon, peat. malt and sweet caramel notes. Flavour is more of the same but once in the mouth the bourbon becomes a little too much for me. Just a little less and it really could be excellent. Lovely tangy malt but it is all overshadowed by all the bourbon. Still a mighty fine beer though.

Bottle. Brought home from Systembolaget in Malmö. Thanks Peter. 2008 Vintage on 9. january 2009. Pours utterly black. A disappointing, fizzy, dark, coca-cola fizzy head. Disappears quickly. Extremely powerful aroma. Lots of bourbon (naturally), oak, chocolate, raisins, some slight coffee, good toffee and roasted malts. Quite vinious as well. Low carbonation, fat and oily, wonderful mouthfeel. Just a bit of a fizz at the end. Flavour is stunningly complex. Begins vinious, with hard roasted malts. Then turns nutty and sweet with almond notes. Then coffee and lots of bourbon take over with a woody edge. At the far end, there is a long, lingering, warming, vinious aftertaste with dried fruits, coffee, cocoa and raisins. Really quite wonderful because of its many layers. And impressive that it is only warming and not burning with 13 %.

(Bottle, 2004 vintage) Pours a dark brown (almost black) body with a thin tan head. Aroma of bourbon, wood, chocolate, and marshmallow. Flavor of rich chocolate, toasted marshmallow, caramel, toasted coconut, and vanilla extract. Quite the delight!

12oz bottles acquired in trades with beerhandy & CaptainCougar (thanks!). Poured a dark, dark black with an averaged sized deep brown head. Aromas start with stronger bourbon that give way to vanilla, oak, brown sugar, and dark fruits. Tastes of bourbon, vanilla, chocolate, and roasted malts. Warming alcohol finish. Nice smooth body. I start a 2 week vacation today and this beer was the perfect way to kick it off!
