Commercial Description:
"I really wanted to do something special for our 1000th batch at the original brewpub. Goose Island could have thrown a party. But we did something better. We brewed a beer. A really big batch of stout-so big the malt was coming out of the top of the mash tun. After fermentation we brought in some bourbon barrels to age the stout. One hundred and fifty days later, Bourbon County Stout was born-A liquid as dark and dense as a black hole with a thick foam the color of bourbon barrels. The nose is a mix of charred oak, vanilla, carmel and smoke. One sip has more flavor than your average case of beer. It overpowers anything in the room. People have even said that it’s a great cigar beer, but I haven’t yet tried a cigar that would stand up to it." Brewmaster Greg Hall; IBU’s 60-High Color - Midnight Was 11%, the 2007 and 2008 are listed at 13%.

Pours black into a tulip. Brown head quickly subsides to skim surface. Bourbon and chocolate aromas. Creamy and full with immediate bourbon burn. Lasting espresso finish. Nice.

Bottle. Nose-whisky. Taste-roasted coconut, bourbon, grahm crackers, roasted marshmallows. Lots of smoke and roast. Another excellent beer. If you have the means, I highly recommend you pick this up.

Bottle. Pours opaque black with a diminishing brown head. Aroma of vanilla, wood, whisky, and a tad amount alcohol. Rich flavor of expresso, maple syrup, dark roasted malts, and peppery hops. Very strong, hot bourbon finish with a hint of sweet black licorice. Very good stuff. However, I think this one is a little young unless you love bourbon. I have a few more of these that I will cellar. I suspect this will get even better with age.

Vintage 2007: Just got my hands on some. This is awesome. Thick jet black with a foamy brown head. Bourbon, chocolate, coffee, caramel malt in the nose. The aroma was so pleasing that I lingered quite awhile there. The body was rich and robust, slightly oily and smooth and so very satisfying. The flavor was well worth the wait and lived up to the aroma with strong Bourbon, coffee, and chocolate notes that caressed the tongue and titilated the palate. This was ready for drinking as is but holds such promise for cellaring. My rating numbers are for this 2007 batch.

Poured black with a brown head that disappeared in a flash. The nose was distillery, bourbon, vanilla, some coffee, prunes. Thick and viscous palate. Flavor was intense. Alcohol. Malts cut the edge just a tad. A nice sipping beer on a cold winter night.

12oz bottle (2006) from drewbeerme - thanks, Andrew! Oh my goodness this is a delectable beer. A lovely wafting aroma of malts, bourbon, and vanilla, the thick, oily brew is very appetizing. As it warms (and warms the drinker!), its complexity really comes through. It’s not merely thick in the sense that it’s soupy, but rather is robust, solid, with character. It’s not simply malty and roasty, a fist to the face like so many impy stouts, but has a really broad profile, with subtle coffee roasts, abundant chocolate aromas, slight smoke, and molasses coming through. Smooth and velvety in the mouthfeel too, making it an awesome sipper. I need more.

2008 bottle:
Pours black with a small head. Complex aroma of toffee, vanilla, bourbon and some smoke. Sweet and thick mouth feel. flavour is bourbon, toffee and liquorice. Long warming finish where the alcohol flavour shows up, but in a positive way. Usually I don’t like bourbon, but this is a wonderful beer.

(Blind rating at sk8viking’s.) Pours black with a brown dimminishing head. Smells nice and hoppy. Sweet and very full. Aromas of roasted malts, alcohol, oak, liquirish and prunes. Full bodied. Crispy dry finish. Fantastic... But the bourbon notes the day after are not as good.
