Commercial Description:
"I really wanted to do something special for our 1000th batch at the original brewpub. Goose Island could have thrown a party. But we did something better. We brewed a beer. A really big batch of stout-so big the malt was coming out of the top of the mash tun. After fermentation we brought in some bourbon barrels to age the stout. One hundred and fifty days later, Bourbon County Stout was born-A liquid as dark and dense as a black hole with a thick foam the color of bourbon barrels. The nose is a mix of charred oak, vanilla, carmel and smoke. One sip has more flavor than your average case of beer. It overpowers anything in the room. People have even said that it’s a great cigar beer, but I haven’t yet tried a cigar that would stand up to it." Brewmaster Greg Hall; IBU’s 60-High Color - Midnight Was 11%, the 2007 and 2008 are listed at 13%.

Wow! You can smell this one across the room. Wonderful aromas of chocolatey malt, charcoal/smoke and vanilla. Appearance is very dark with a pretty substantial brown head. It’s a darn good stout, too. Malt really dominates the flavor up front. It slowly gives way to a rich chocolate/vanilla bean flavor. It packs a little alcoholic heat towards the end of each sip that is pretty nice for this time of December.

2007 bottle (thanks to those of you who have sent me a bottle or five in the past year). blackest colored viscous pour i’ve seen in a while. it’s topped with a tiny tan head that i worked vigorously for. very robust aroma that i could smell from across the room... definite bourbon, sugar cane, wood, vanilla, chocolate, charcoal, tobacco and booze. very rich and complex. the flavor.... not so much. bourbon burn and sweetness dominate over any beer that may have been in here. there are nuances but they are hard to get at... rich roasty grain, chocolate, vanilla and a light salty element. it’s not bad just really hot. it finishes with lots of booze and barrel flavors before the alcohol starts penetrating through my skin. full bodied with a very creamy mouth feel. this needs some time to mellow. good thing i’ve got so many!...

Bottle, 2007. Pours black with a small dark tan/red head that dissipates quickly. Aroma of bourbon. Flavor of bourbon, alcohol sweetness. I can tell that this is a better bourbon barrel aged beer than a lot of other BBA beers, but I can’t actually taste any of the underlying stout. I suppose it’s less bourbony than other beers, but it is definitely dominated by the bourbon. And I don’t want my beer to taste like bourbon, I want it to taste like beer. Also the 13% makes it extremely difficult to drink. Suffice it to say, I didn’t care for this bourbon bomb.

2006 bottle. Super thick black motor-oil pourwith no head. Rousing gives a thin dark tan head. The aroma is oak, bourbon, toffee, and chocolate. The bourbon aroma is unique in that it isn’t caustic, but softer somehow. A nice dark chocolate aroma helps, too. The mouthfeel is viscous and silky. Sharp bourbon notes begin the taste, and that’s pretty much what dominates from there, safe for some chocolately tones underneath. Warmth from the alcohol is there too, but it isn’t overbearing. Bet this would age pretty good.

(10/10/08) Draught sample at the brewpub in Clybourn, Chicago. 2008 batch - 13.5% ABV. Black-colored with a brown head. A rather alcoholic aroma with some bourbon, dark chocolate, a bit of coffee, wood and smoke notes and dark fruit hints. Sweet flavor with lots of chocolate (pralines), bourbon and a bit of caramel. Lots of alcohol in the flavor. Full thick body. Too much alcohol and quite a bit of bourbon in the flavor but still good even if not too drinkable.

Served at the Hop Leaf, Aug 2006 (their last bottle!) Bottled on 8/16/05. Pours deep black with brown edges and a light brown head which fades quickly. Vanilla beans, bourbon/oak and chocolate in the nose. Whoah, the flavor has a huge but pleasant presence of bourbon, whiskey and oak then comes notes of dark cherry, vanilla, chocolate, roasted malt, caramel , pipe tobacco and dark roasted coffee. Sweet with ample hops and roastiness to help balance it out. Just massive tasting. Alcohol content is present and actually adds to the drinking experience. Full, round and very lush on the palate with lively but gentle rolling waves of very fine-beaded carbonation - absolutely perfect mouthfeel. I loved it, even after walking around Chicago on a summer day. I need to have this again.

Bottle thanks to cavie. Pours a deep black with copper head, stains the glass. Aroma is of strong dark roast, oak, chocolate, whisky, some light soy. Flavor of strong dark roast, a little soy, spicey, whisky, chocolate, a little oak. Mouth feel is creamy, heavy body with low carbonation. Overall, it’s a sipper, but one of the best stouts that I have ever had! Very warming as well.
