Lots of stale wood in the aroma that makes me think a little of hamster bedding. Bourbon (surprise), carmel. Sweet carmel flavor, kind of sticky, a little roast, a little bit of resiny hops, vanilla ice cream. Soft full palate with just a touch of astringency. I’d kind of like to taste this stout sans barrel. It has elements that are really very good, but it can’t seem to make them cohesive, and the oak isn’t helping, especially in the aroma. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 11, 2008 Pour is a think motor oil black with dark brown head which quickly diminishes to nothing. This stout is hugely bourbon. It has vanilla, oak, lots of chocolate, and tons of bourbon, it even bites like bourbon. Mouthfeel is creamy and mouth coating. I highly enjoyed this, has tons of flavor, but may be lacking slightly in complexity. boto (1345), Granby, Connecticut, USA

I finally got to Chicago to have it again after many years. This one pours an inky, thick, very dark brown color. The pour from the bartender resulted in almost no head, and what was there was light brown and didn’t last at all. The nose is full of bourbon. Not as much as a shot, but very nice. Also some noted of chocolate, vanilla, and roastiness. The taste is incredibly rich and smooth, thick and silky. The flavor of bourbon is there, but well balanced with a full rich imperial stout behind it. A hint of sweetness in the aftertaste. This is phenominal!!!! Furseth (1333), Kungälv, Sweden

| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 10, 2009 This is one of those times where the aroma of the beer opens my eyes and tickles the synapses in my brain. It’s bourbon, it’s toasted oak, it’s barnyard (well maintained barnyard), it’s friggin’ Kentucky with a touch of heat. Reminds me of my sister in-law’s horses. Sexy black, darkish tan head. Instantly coats my mouth and kind of insulates it for the next sip. Oily, slick, more toasted wood, burnt sugar, edible motor oil, and love. I have to swallow twice. Damn near cloying, but there’s just too much going on to distract my palate. This beer hits me on all cylinders. Gets more sticky with each sip, though I don’t seem to mind it. | 4.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Jan 27, 2009 Oily black, no head at all - murky and still like a glass of motor oil. BIG bourbon aroma, smoky and oaky with rich molasses and cocoa, rounded out by caramel. Bourbon and wood notes meld nicely with rich caramel malts, alcohol lightly nips at the back of your tongue but is not overbearing at all. The swallow - there is the alcohol, warming down to your belly. Another sniff - now picking up vanilla and a green-grape fruitiness. Next sip - more in the way of cocoa powder and smoke this time, carbonation level low, allowing flavors to melt onto your tongue. Rich, complex, and damn near perfect.
