Commercial Description:
"I really wanted to do something special for our 1000th batch at the original brewpub. Goose Island could have thrown a party. But we did something better. We brewed a beer. A really big batch of stout-so big the malt was coming out of the top of the mash tun. After fermentation we brought in some bourbon barrels to age the stout. One hundred and fifty days later, Bourbon County Stout was born-A liquid as dark and dense as a black hole with a thick foam the color of bourbon barrels. The nose is a mix of charred oak, vanilla, carmel and smoke. One sip has more flavor than your average case of beer. It overpowers anything in the room. People have even said that it’s a great cigar beer, but I haven’t yet tried a cigar that would stand up to it." Brewmaster Greg Hall; IBU’s 60-High Color - Midnight Was 11%, the 2007 and 2008 are listed at 13%.

Sampled at friend’s beer tasting. Pours a black oil color with a deep tan head. Aroma is dark chocolates, vanilla, oak, coffee, caramel. Flavor is sweet, but with notes of bitter dark chocolates. Finish is smooth, and alcohol isn’t that noticeable, at least not at the amount I consumed. A wonderful, brew that could only have been better had it been served with a cigar on the side.

Bottle... Poured black with a tiny brown head. Aroma of sweet bourbon. Smooth palate and was a little dry. Noticeable bourbon-whiskey and alcohol notes. Roasted malts and a charred character before sweet chocolate came in. Finished with whiskey and sweet, candy sugars.

2006 bottle, shared with and thanks to HogTownHarry (as always!!!) Appearance: Oily, pitch black, no head. Aroma: Toasty aroma, figs and alcohol, nutmeg too. Flavour: A pinball machine effect on my tongue! Alcohol and chocolate and espresso and more chocolate! So silky, so creamy yet such an acidic alcohol finish PHEW! My face is burning!! Thanks Harry!

Pours dark brown/black, with a tan head. Aromas of bourbon, dark fruit, malt, along with smaller amounts of chocolate, coffee, and vanilla. Flavors are bourbon, dark fruit, chocolate, malt and a little bit of bitter hops and coffee. Body is heavy, and it works for this beer. Similar to Barley John’s Dark Knight.

This is one of those times where the aroma of the beer opens my eyes and tickles the synapses in my brain. It’s bourbon, it’s toasted oak, it’s barnyard (well maintained barnyard), it’s friggin’ Kentucky with a touch of heat. Reminds me of my sister in-law’s horses. Sexy black, darkish tan head. Instantly coats my mouth and kind of insulates it for the next sip. Oily, slick, more toasted wood, burnt sugar, edible motor oil, and love. I have to swallow twice. Damn near cloying, but there’s just too much going on to distract my palate. This beer hits me on all cylinders. Gets more sticky with each sip, though I don’t seem to mind it.

2006 12 oz bottle from discount liqour in Milwaukee. Opaque black color with very thin burnt red/brown head that I had to beg to come out, but it was oh so beautiful when it did. Fantastic smoky bourbon aroma, with sweet malt, caramel, dark chocolate, darklord in quality. Flavor is roasted malt, vanilla bourbon, the darkent belgian chocolate, some fruit, like cherries, alc is there but not overpowering. Full body, no carb, maybe a little syrup. Overall an amazing brew that knocks down most impys out there. So good!!

2007 Bottle. Pours an oil black with a small brown head and some slight lacing. Aroma is burnt oatmeal, bourbon, smoke, coffee grounds and prunes. Taste starts with tamari soy, coffee and finshes with dry cocoa powder and some alcohol warmth. Pretty nice.

Tasted blind at Sk8vikings amazing Porter/Stout tasting - Black body, big creamy head, some laces; Huge sweet alcohol powering nose, flowery sweet, Bourbon barrel, with some time the oak becomes balanced, unfortunately the alcohol and sharpness of the Bourbon (Bourbon is a terrible Whiskey anyway, why ruin you beer with such a barrel) overshadows the depth and complexity, sweet oxidized notes as well; Huge very, very sweet alcohol like body; into medium long finish with lots of fresh wood and again alcohol (or maybe the sharpness of the Bourbon) that overpowers everything else.
