Very dark pour, no light gets through except at the far edges. Dark tan head can be worked up if agitated. Aroma is all of deep, rich chocolate and sweet malts. Alcohol stings the nostrils in the sweetest kind of way. Deep bourbon smell. Taste is absolutely amazing! First it’s sweet with chocolate and cream. Quickly stings the tongue with the higher alcohol content. A large wave of roasted malts hits you after that and the finish is a mix of everything that is good in the world. Fabulous! | 4.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Feb 5, 2008 Updated: Feb 12, 2008This is really really good. Always sounded good to me and I finally got my hands on some. I ended up getting 3 bottles of it, between two people (James and Hank thanks!) and it was amazing. I will always trade for this beer. Nose is bourbon, taste is all bourbon with a tiny bit of coffee and chocolate flavors. Mainly bourbon, if you dislike bourbon don’t even bother with this one. Save it for me please. If I could buy this on a regular basis it would easily become my top priority at the liquor store. You cannot be a puss to drink this. For any rating out there below a 4 is probably because they dislike bourbon. So take my rating as a warning so another bottle is not wasted on those unworthy! This should never move out of the 100 percentile IMO. mcmd (147), Louisville, Kentucky, USA

Thick jet black with tan head that settles quickly, good sudsy lacing on the glass. Notes of vanilla, caramel, nuts, dark fruit, and of course lots of smoky bourbon. Flavor explosion ....all I can think of is bourbon balls at Christmas - dark chocolate, bourbon, vanilla/caramel, smooth smokey bourbon finish... Excellent. Nice mouthfeel, rich but not too thick. Very close to a perfect beer. Living in Kentucky, I’ve tried many bourbon stouts, but this is the best hands down. Anyone that still has the 2006, drink now. Immiz182 (17), Appleton, Wisconsin, USA

Extremely flavorful. It does have more flavor in one sip than in other entire cases of beer. Had it in a 12 oz bottle at the Goose Island brewpub sjolles85 (90), Tampa, Florida, USA

You can really taste the 13% abv... I really want to try a new bottle to see the difference. 41cubs (149), , New Jersey, USA
| 4.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 20/20 | Dec 17, 2009 The scene around the first barrel tapping of this must have been equivelant to the first nugget found at the California gold rush, the first time an equation worked out for a young Einstein, the glimmer of a bulb reflecting off of Edison’s spectacles or the first to witness a strapping green George Herman at a Baltimore boys school yard diamond. You have achieved dark chocolate, black licorice, sherry, dark rum, and sweet cherry wood in the aroma. You have achieved a flavor directly descendant of a brown sugar crusted perfectly smoked and barked sweet pork cracklin. You have achieved a viscosity of richness and superb slick glory. In this beer, Goose Island, you have achieved and you should be proud. Thank You Goose Island. 2008 12oz. 2Roses (11), , Wisconsin, USA

At the time I thought this was a great beer and could definitely get more interesting with age. Opened my second bottle tonight. Gorgeous black color that looks like dark molases in the glass with a head that looks like a chocolate milkshake. Nose is a delicious bourbon aroma with coffee and semisweet chocolate. Taste is powerful...alcohol, coffee, bourbon, and charred oak. One of the most viscous feels you’ll get on the palate (other than Sam Adams Triple Bock or something like that). I can’t wait to try more of this over the next five years because I think the flavors will realy develop.
