Commercial Description:
"I really wanted to do something special for our 1000th batch at the original brewpub. Goose Island could have thrown a party. But we did something better. We brewed a beer. A really big batch of stout-so big the malt was coming out of the top of the mash tun. After fermentation we brought in some bourbon barrels to age the stout. One hundred and fifty days later, Bourbon County Stout was born-A liquid as dark and dense as a black hole with a thick foam the color of bourbon barrels. The nose is a mix of charred oak, vanilla, carmel and smoke. One sip has more flavor than your average case of beer. It overpowers anything in the room. People have even said that it’s a great cigar beer, but I haven’t yet tried a cigar that would stand up to it." Brewmaster Greg Hall; IBU’s 60-High Color - Midnight Was 11%, the 2007 and 2008 are listed at 13%.

Pours almost black with almost no head. The nose of toffee, vanilla, bourbon and some smoke. Comes across the palate as vanilla, coffee, dark fruit sweetness and bourbon balance; that also has a mild coffee lingering after taste. Very thick much like a traditional stout. Very good!

Smells of bourbon and toasty with a bit of chocolate. The bourbon taste in this brew is HUGE and I love it. This is far and away one of the best stouts I’ve ever had. I’m not huge on stouts, but this is one I would pick up again.

12 oz. bottle (2008), poured into a snifter. A truly huge beer. Ar: Could smell it from an open bottle two feet away. Strong chocolate, smoke and vanilla w/ underlying oak and nutmeg. Ap: Viscous pour w/ a tiny Cinnamon head. Dense black w/ caramel around the edges. Fl: Raisins, plums, burnt sugar, oaky vanilla and excellent Bourbon. Dark chocolate at the back of one’s mouth, finishing silky milk chocolate. Pa: Silky, like a truffle. Leaves a warming alcoholic burn like a fine Bourbon- lovely.

Bottle from Malt & Vine. Tasted blind as 1 of 15 in May, 2009. Pours black with only a little mocha head. Great aroma with smoke, borubon, chocolate and caramel. Nice sweet flavor of bourbon, chocolate and molasses with nice bitter balance. Slick, medium body with great finish. This was the highlight of the night and at 4.8, officially my highest rated brew. (10/5/10/4/19) Re-Rate On tap at GI Clybourn 7/20/09. Pours jet black, mocha head. Bourbon, chocolate and coffee aromas. Great sweetness with oak and alcohol. Amazing stout. 10/5/9/4/18

Pours from bottle black with virtually no head. Smell of toffee and bourbon. Flavour of bourbon (obviously), oak, some nuttyness, earthy. Slightly sweet, very full. You definatly notice the high Alchohol content, which is to be expected. Very good. Will keep stocked up in the fridge!

This beer is amazing. Pours really thick. I thought I messed up the pour, since I didn’t have a ton of head, but it sounds like it doesn’t really have a lot. The taste was amazing. For some people, I could see the significant bourbon taste puttting some people off, esp. because of the alcohol floavor that comes along with a bourbon taste. But I love bourbon and beer with a significant bourbon essence. That caramel, vanilla, and woody flavor that comes from bourbon is ever-present with this beer. It’s amazing. Love it. Can’t wait to buy more and just let it sit in my beer cooler for a few years.

Yowza! Tap at Churchkey DC. Pours inky black with a thin dark brown head. Huge aroma of vanilla, also some chocolate, malt, and oak. The flavor is all of that - with the emphasis on vanilla - plus caramel, roasted barley, a touch of bourbon, and a little burn from the alcohol. Aged a couple years this will be perfection.

This one is a wow. It’s almost like drinking a peaty, single-malt scotch. Great with cigars.
