Commercial Description:
"I really wanted to do something special for our 1000th batch at the original brewpub. Goose Island could have thrown a party. But we did something better. We brewed a beer. A really big batch of stout-so big the malt was coming out of the top of the mash tun. After fermentation we brought in some bourbon barrels to age the stout. One hundred and fifty days later, Bourbon County Stout was born-A liquid as dark and dense as a black hole with a thick foam the color of bourbon barrels. The nose is a mix of charred oak, vanilla, carmel and smoke. One sip has more flavor than your average case of beer. It overpowers anything in the room. People have even said that it’s a great cigar beer, but I haven’t yet tried a cigar that would stand up to it." Brewmaster Greg Hall; IBU’s 60-High Color - Midnight Was 11%, the 2007 and 2008 are listed at 13%.

2009-11-12, bottle at Monk’s Café, Stockholm, vintage 2007, 2 years old, 13% ABV, 9-4-8-4-17=42
Black color; it’s almost flat, with no carbonation, no head. The aroma shows a good mix of Bourbon vanilla, whiskey, roasted malt, paper, cardboard, very light smoke. It has a good body strength; strong chocolate flavor, burning alcohol feeling; welll rich; dark caramel, light vanilla, light smoke.

2007-05-23, vintage 2006, 1 year old, 11% ABV, 8-5-9-5-18=45
Black oil, thin head. Intense aroma, very sweet, of vanilla, oak, roasted malt, tar, leather. Full mouthfeel, thick, oily, sweet, malty, with a very nice roasted malt line, some liquorice, cookies, vanilla, dark chocolate. Strong final, with a clear presence of the roasted malt, sugars and vanilla, salty dark chocolate 99% cocoa; toffee and rubharb; the alcohol starts warming the mouth

Bought for 10$ at New Beer Distributors, NY, it’s a great beer to celebrate Milan victory in the Champions League tonight!

As the bourbon aged craze rages on, I often think backto the first (at least that I can recall)...Bourbon County Stout. At least from 1998. This beer simply rocks. Over-the-top chocplate, vanilla, molasses and bourbon flavors. ZThick as 10W30 with a neat deep brown/red hue. This beer will age a well as any beer that I have tried. I first rated this lower due, primarily to the high alcohol taste. But it has dawned on me that this is intended and is not a function of the 11% abv but the bourbon characteristic taken on by hte barrel aging. Anyway, ages ti a forget about dissing this so-called fad. Any process that continues to fortify the unique and overwhelming flavors typically reserved for port wines and single malt scotches is fine with me.

bottle. WOW! I will not take the time to describe what this one looks like, ’cause it looks like a stout. A Big, Bold Imperial Stout! Aroma and flavors of bourbon, vanilla, hints of chocolate & coffee. This one reminded me of Weyerbacher Heresey, but this one had a full bodied mouthfeel, where Heresey was a bit thin on the finish. There is a lot going on in this brew. The bourbon is a predominant flavor here, but does not overpower all that is going on . In the past, I have not been overly impressed with the relatively expensive brews, ( this one was $4.75 per 12 oz. bottle ) but this Goose is good. Damn Good! If you are a stout lover, as I’ve become, be sure to pick this one up/

From the bottle, pours thick and black like 10W-40 motor oil, with a very small tan foamy head. Deep and rich aroma of dark malts with a hint of alcohol and a smoothness from the oak barrels. Taste is equally strong and rich, thick malts, some brown sugar/molasses, a bit of bourbon, a hint of alcohol, and a lightly bitter bite in the aftertaste. Thick and incredibly smooth, this is a pretty fantastic beer, though I’d be hard pressed to drink more than two at once.

Perfect Impy Stout. Aroma is wood, leather and coffee. Pours black with almost no head. Nose is bourbon and a slight bit of molasses. Flavor is an INCREDIBLY smooth taste - with notes of raisins, currants, leather, tannins and just a little coffee. Finish is a nice woody note that begs for more. Sipping this beer is as close to heaven as you can get.

jet black. pours like spent oil. only the faintest signs of any head or carbonation. oak, toasty wood, molasses, prunes, bourbon, and vanilla all appear. i swear you can smell this stuff from a few feet away. this is a super rich, multi layered treat. loads of prune and figs stand out. the firm assertive and powerful combination of flavor is sweet and dense, but well hopped.

(2005 bottle) Aromas of coffee, chocolate, vanilla, oak, and a touch of smoke arise from this glass after the pour. It pours a thick black with just a tiny ring of tan head around the edge of the glass. Smooth creamy mouthfeel, flavors of dark chocolate, molasses, vanilla, and a touch of bourbon. Slight warming in the chest as this was swallowed. Truly an exceptional beer.

Pours a opaque black with a very thin light brown head. Beautiful lacing into my snifter. Aroma is amazing. Roasted and caramel malts compliment the vanilla, licorice and tawny port wonderfully. Alcohol is alway present, but not at all offending. The flavors match the aroma. Body is full and the texture is oily. Very similar to Dogfish’s World Wide Stout. Amazing stout. Wish it was available in Mass.
