Commercial Description:
"I really wanted to do something special for our 1000th batch at the original brewpub. Goose Island could have thrown a party. But we did something better. We brewed a beer. A really big batch of stout-so big the malt was coming out of the top of the mash tun. After fermentation we brought in some bourbon barrels to age the stout. One hundred and fifty days later, Bourbon County Stout was born-A liquid as dark and dense as a black hole with a thick foam the color of bourbon barrels. The nose is a mix of charred oak, vanilla, carmel and smoke. One sip has more flavor than your average case of beer. It overpowers anything in the room. People have even said that it’s a great cigar beer, but I haven’t yet tried a cigar that would stand up to it." Brewmaster Greg Hall; IBU’s 60-High Color - Midnight Was 11%, the 2007 and 2008 are listed at 13%.

Bottle in Chicago. Dark as stout should be. Bourbon comes across on the nose and at first taste. Followed closely by a deep chocolate flavor that blends nicely with the bourbon. Left with a nice warm feeling that reminds me I get my moneys worth of alcohol when I pay for this one. Very rich and powerful, 2 was enough in terms of alcohol and flavor.

12 oz bottle, finally! Wow this is a fine ass beer... Impressively done, silky smooth, tasty, gentle, rich and so on so on. Pours like motor oil, dark black with a slight head the comes well after the pour and dissipates quickly, minimal lacing. Aroma of warm alcohol/bourbon, oak, dark chocolate, malts and just a touch of vanilla. Thick silky taste with oak, molasses, caramel, alcohol and roasted malts. Lovely brew, bourbon doesn’t dominate, but just adds background complexity to a beer that would have been excellent anyway. Loved it! Go Cubbies!

Dark black pour with a thin beige tan head. Smell is oaky and roasted malt with a nice bourbon character in there. Great flavor of roasted chocolate and a nice smooth aged bourbon. Very enjoyable. Creamy smooth thick mouthfeel. Really drinkable and flavorful. I really enjoyed it.

Poured almost syrupy black with absolutely no head (like marriage). The aroma, but more-so the flavor, was overwhelmingly sweet and malty. The coffee flavors were put on hold for huge chocolate tones and BOURBON (duh), whereas DTM thought the aroma was more mint-chocolate. I agreed, and we continued to get worked in Halo, while maintaining the zen atmosphere (at least, until the beer was gone...).

2006 vintage (bottled 7/3/06). (also my 100th rating). Geez, this poured pitch black with the consistency of motor oil. Just wow. Dark as night with an almost non-existent tan head. Gorgeous. The aroma is wonderful with chocolate, vanilla with a not overwhelming presence of bourbon. I tried a 2007 bottle a few weeks ago and the bourbon was much more pronounced. Letting it sit for almost two years has definitely calmed it down for what I feel is the better. It definitely becomes more noticeable as the beer warms. Flavor has the same components of vanilla, chocolate, smokiness, bourbon, a sticky caramel. It’s so much. This stuff is as smooth as silk to drink too. Slight alcohol burn in the finish, but just wow. Can’t wait to let the remaining bottles I have left to age a bit more for drinking.

I live in the area and to be frank have not been a big fan of GI products, this is the exception. Even living here you still have to know where to get it. a flavor bomb to say the least. A well crafted beer one will do at the 13%. Not inexpensive but something to savor.

(10.21.08) On draught at Firkin in Libertyville. 2008 batch. Opaque black with an average sized brown head that quickly dissipates. Little to no lacing. Unsweetened chocolate, coffee, brown sugar, vanilla, pepper, cola, and oak on the nose. Hops are there, but malt leads the way. Moderate sweetness up front, which gives way to some bitterness in the finish. Outstanding mouthfeel. Chewy, full-bodied, without being quite syrupy. Alcohol starts out present and delicious though it leans toward solvent as it warms. Great use of bourbon barrels.

Crushed with Jakebra. Fuckin intense. Another completely exhausting beer to drink. Plenty of bourbon, and warmness, and a special dose of awesomeness added in. Might make you speak gibberish after each sip…which adds to awesomeness.
