Pours real nice and thick with no head whatsoever. Smell is incredible. Lots of roasted malts, coffee and chocolate, with some hints of bourbon/alcohol coming through as well.
This has a myriad of flavors going on in the taste. However, they’re not blended together very well. It’s one after another as they fight for the lead. The flavors are good, but not working well and complimenting as they should. Huge, creamy mouthfeel.
Update: 2007 batch.
This beer is incredible. Much more complex barrel flavor. Very good vanilla, bourbon and oak in the flavor. This batch is everything this beer needs to be. One of my favorite beers right now. dkingsella (92), Portland, Oregon, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Nov 6, 2009 Pours a very dark black with thin mocha head that disspaears before you can take the first sip. Aroma is incredible with more than I can identify...begins with a nice bourbon aroma followed by notes of dark chocolate, caramel, coffee and faint vanilla. Mouthfeel is full and vicous. There’s pleny going on in the flavor...bitter chocolate, coffee and dark fruit. A little alcohol in the finish but no alcohol burn whatsover. A very complex beer...this one goes right to the top of my list. travita (1926), Frisco, Texas, USA

Strong almost overpowering aromas, you can pick out the bourbon and the oak. Booming flavors of oak, bourbon, coffee but somehow they manage to stay smooth. Thick body with a nice burp. The aftertaste is a very lovely dark chocolate.

And at $5.91a 12 oz bottle, I wont worry about drinking this often but I would most definitley try this again (occasionally) with a cuban cigar.
It’s unfortunate that something ’Bourbon County" (which is in the region where true Bourbon is made, Central Kentucky) is actually brewed in Illinois, but they know how to do it.
Mollasas-thick and strong as the bourbon it resembles, this beer should only be sampled at the proper temp and with a well-lubricated taster to appreciate its qualites.
Exceptional beer. lb4lb (2011), Austin, Texas, USA

’07 Bottle. Pours dark, dark black and oily with a short lived tan head in a snifter. Smell is bourbon, oak, then sweet roasty malt. A fair amount of bourbon in the nose, but not overwhelming. Taste is oily bourbon woodiness, then bittersweet chocolately roast. Balanced well, leaning towards a touch more bourbon than most bourbon beers I’ve had. Very light alcohol in the flavor for 13%, but a slight bit warming. Rich oily mouthfeel and light, but softly prickling carbonation. This is damn good. tomaroth (31), Troy, Michigan, USA

I bought a case and am planning on trying a bottle every few months to see how it ages. Also had it at Clybourn, and felt it was better bottled. bigtaster (184), Grand Rapids, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Mar 5, 2009 Pours tar black with no head, some dark brown hues. Nose is tremendous with burst of malty fruit, raisin, also hint of some tongue bruising hops. Most notable is the immediate smoothness that is uncommon in a beer on this size. The hit of sweet malt brings molasses, and dark chocolate to the forefront, as the sip finishes a tingling covers the palate. As the malty sweetness slowly melts off the tongue the bitterness becomes more prevalent in the elongated finish. That was the only beer I had that night - it was huge. Plenty of vanilla, esspresso and bourbon to please the senses. Just opening the bottle gave me pause as sweet aromas saturated the air, cloaking me in an unexpected euphoria. What a treat. I will have to try more bourdon aged beer.
