Commercial Description:
Traditionally, there are a lot of rules when it comes to brewing great beer. The fact that American craft brewers have broken those rules to produce some of the world’s finest beers is downright heroic. At Goose Island we live and die by hops, so breaking the rules meant pushing the hop limit to the extreme to create this monster Imperial IPA. We took three of our favorite hops, TETTNANG, SIMCOE, and CASCADE, and balanced their spiciness with tons of malt. Them we went back and dumped in MORE HOPS and more malt until this beer was exploding with flavor...strong enough to wake the dead and filled with more bitterness than a woman scorned. This Imperial IPA is absolutely gigantic, you’ll smell the hops from about a yard away. What will surprise you is how incredibly drinkable it is. Pair it up with the saltiest blue cheese you can find, and go nuts.

12 oz, bottled 11.03.05, from Ross! Thanks brother! Nose is incredibly full with hops with just a tad of yeasty dank must. Hops keep coming in the flavor which has lots of orange and grapefruit present. A little heat at the end, but this beer is really just very smooth and hoppy. I never know what to write about double IPA’s I really like because I always end up drinking them so fast. This was is really improving as it warms from cooler temp. Ross, I really appreciate you hooking me up with this after I lost the bet. Go mountaineers!

filtered, but still a tiny bit opaque. fantastic nose, tons of hops, but not the usual cascade/centennial bullshit. a more mellowed, round hop profile. surprising amount of body for a double ipa. interestingly the malts sort of bring the alcohol out rather than hiding it, but this is still drinkable as hell. bitterness lasts forever. pretty damned good, but not remotely worth the price. go for 90 minute.

Bomber from shigadeyo, Thanks, Craig! Pours a clear, bright copper with a fluffy white head. Medium body and carbonation. Aroma and taste of mango and grapefruit. This is one big and tasty beer. Pretty much covers all the bases in the DIPA league.

12-oz., courtesy the kind hospitality of BitBucket. Clear coppery medium amber. Moussy bubbly white head. Huge orange and grapefruit nose. Forward attack--medium body and active carb and huge sweet mid-palate biscuits and caramels there, too. Clingy tingly grapefruit finish. Fantastic stuff.

When I poured this beer the smell of hops rushed my nose. I pours a nice orange colour with a white head. The taste of this IPA has mutiple hop tastes in your mouth at a time. This IPA is in my top 3!

Tap at Hop Devil Grill, Daze of the Devil Strong Ale Festival. 12oz bottle, bottled 11/03/05. Murky orange appearance; off-white head with decent lacing. Huge amounts of citrus and grapefruit in the aroma, slightly tart; maple syrup notes as well. Lots of chewy orange and citrus hops in the mouthfeel: mildly dank, tasty, with caramel and maple syrup maltiness; well-balanced. Strange, dusty notes in the finish; dry with some citrus. Definitely an orange-dominated hop profile, and I’d like to try a fresher bottle of this sometime. 7.4.8.3.15=3.7

Rerate, fresher 12oz bottle, courtesy of Monger. Thanks a bunch, James! Much more satisfying this time around: dank grapefruit and citrus hops, without any hints of dustiness. Juicy orange and grapefruit, nice malty balance, very well-done double IPA. 8.3.8.4.16=3.9.

12oz bottle. Beer 6 of the Bartzilla’s Death Metal Beer Tasting 1/12/2007, consumed with many great beer drinkers including Bartzilla, Naven, as well as Lee creator of Arrogant Bastard, and a really cool guy. This brew is pretty solid. It stood up to being consumed directly following 3F Dreadnaught and still managed to taste very nice. Solid hopps throughout with nice complexity.

Bottled, served in an English pint glass. It had a clear, dark amber body with a medium- lasting off-white head. Aroma was of nice strong, citrusy-piney hops with a little booziness. Flavor was wildly bitter and aggressive. At first this seemed quite abrasive, but after a few sips my palate adjusted and I found this beer to be quite pleasing.
