Commercial Description:
Traditionally, there are a lot of rules when it comes to brewing great beer. The fact that American craft brewers have broken those rules to produce some of the world’s finest beers is downright heroic. At Goose Island we live and die by hops, so breaking the rules meant pushing the hop limit to the extreme to create this monster Imperial IPA. We took three of our favorite hops, TETTNANG, SIMCOE, and CASCADE, and balanced their spiciness with tons of malt. Them we went back and dumped in MORE HOPS and more malt until this beer was exploding with flavor...strong enough to wake the dead and filled with more bitterness than a woman scorned. This Imperial IPA is absolutely gigantic, you’ll smell the hops from about a yard away. What will surprise you is how incredibly drinkable it is. Pair it up with the saltiest blue cheese you can find, and go nuts.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours a clear honey golden-amber, with a silky white rim. Really juicy, gummy fresh hop aroma. Honeydew, plums, light pale cherries and lots of tropical fruit and citrus. Woah. Alcoholic bright grassy hop flavor. A different hop flavor presentation that the aroma. Grassy, resin-filled, pine, and almond skins. A little overly bitter and alcoholic, but holds the texture of the hop oils. Dry and balanced, largely.

Bottle courtesy of molikebeer Pours a hazy orange with a huge off white head. Aroma of hops, citrus and malt. Flavor is earthy hops, a huge malt backbone, citrus, with a bitter yet sweet citrusy finish. Nice Double IPA, hopefully I can try this fresher next time.

12oz bottle from 2007. Pours a murky orange with a frothy tan head. Very heavy lacing on the glass. Aroma is of hops, citrus, spice, and a delicious earthiness. Taste is very hoppy, with sweet floral notes. There are also big tastes of citrus, some spiciness, and a nice alcohol bite. Mouthfeel is thick and sticky. The hop sweetness sticks to the mouth and lingers long after each sip. Age has definitetly mellowed this beer out. It has become more sweet than bitter. It is extremely tasty either way.

Rich copper pour. Lacey thick head. Hoppy, spicy scent. A touch flowery. Uber pale ale bite in the back of the throat bitterness. Overpowering flavour. I am definately not a fan. Thanfully it has a clean finish. Note: I am not a fan of this style of beer, thus why my rate is incongruous to the average.

Pours an opalescent rust with a luscious, creamy, long-lasting, wheat-colored head. It leaves a thick lacing on the glass and heavy rings. You can smell this beer from a mile away, with it’s thick aroma: a sharp spicy hops fade into citric and pear fruity hops. Thick and sweet, with a note of alcohol coming through. I could sit here and smell this all day. Right up front is an earthy hop flavor and prominent sweetness. It is definitely bitter, but not too intense. There is an earthy hop flavor and the bitterness and sweetness dance. It is just a bit cloying. Quite a good brew, intense yet well-balanced. I would only ask it to be a little less sweet.

huge nose of overwhelming hops. bitterness attacks palate and does not let go. not a dry finish; very coating feel which leads to extended bitterness that wont go away

Great color with disconcertingly large bubbles in the head, never seen anything quite like them. The aroma is sweet citrus with a touch of hops. Flavor of pine, citrus, alcohol. I could use more bitter hops, but still a good IPA. Definitely not worth 18 bucks for a four pack, though. I can’t think of many beers that would be.
