Commercial Description:
Affectionately called “ED” in the brewery, this flavorful high-gravity beer is based on the Imperial Brown Goose recipe, but with 43% smoked malt and less finishing hops. These changes allow the smokey complexity from the beechwood kilning to come through more in the aroma and flavor. This beer was just awarded 3rd place at this years Chicago Beer Society fall tasting. Served in a Snifter.

Huge thanks to general_gao for a GROWLER of this at our last tasting. Cheers! Poured brown with a thick off white head. Heavy malt sweetness up from with smoke in the rear. Some sausage and bacon going on, and a hint of dark fruit rounds it out. Slightly boozy finish. This one was really good.

Serious thanks to General Gao for supplying a growler to a tasting he wasn’t able to attend. Oh, pepsican too. Dark brown pour. Aroma was smoked bananas and ham with real nice vanilla. Lots of Banana and some other fruits beneath the smoke in the taste. Lots of depth here, real nice

Draft at Clybourn. Pours a dark brown with almost no head. Nice smoky aroma, I am really starting to like smoked beers even more. The alcohol was pretty well disguised. Nice smoky flavor with some caramel in there as well. Very good beer.

Draft at GI Clybourn. Poured a clear dark brown-orange color with a tan head. Aroma was of well smoked, salted bacon. There was also a whiff of chocolate. Medium to full bodied and sweet. There was a dash of salt and a hint of alcohol warmth, but at 9.2%, the alcohol flavor was fairly well disguised. Rich and hearty flavors of smoked bacon, caramel, and chocolate. If you go to one of the Vosges Chocolate retailers on Michigan Ave or W Armitage and taste the Mo’s Bacon Bar, it may remind you of this beer. I liked this it a lot because although the smoke was an active player, it wasn’t overbearing. Very good.

Pour is dark cola brown with a light brown head...smell is strongly sweet molasses with perfectly smokey pork alongside...taste is smokey pork followed by a wonderful molasses sweetness like a great BBQ sauce...slow lingeringly sweet finish...

draft at GI clybourn..... poured a dark brown almost black but couldn’t get an accurate portrayal with the lighting. the off-white head worked its way towards the edge of the glas..... aromas of dark fruits and smoke. should have let this one warm up a little more..... flavors of sweet smoky, charred dark fruit with a sweeter malty finish.

Draft. I’m not one for smoked brews, however, this one is pretty good. Smokey flavor dominates w/ oak, peat, and caramel in the back.

draught. We have a thick ruby pour with evident lighter reds in the light. The aroma is meaty and sweet with hints of brown sugar, caramel, oak. Palate is semi-heavy with a syrupy feel. This is certainly a malt-leaning brew with smoke as an afterthought Hints of beef jerky are apparent with little actual smoky or sharp suggestions. I very much enjoyed the beer, with my only disappointment being the lack of aggressive smoke qualities. That aside, this is a delicious drink.
