Commercial Description:
Affectionately called “ED” in the brewery, this flavorful high-gravity beer is based on the Imperial Brown Goose recipe, but with 43% smoked malt and less finishing hops. These changes allow the smokey complexity from the beechwood kilning to come through more in the aroma and flavor. This beer was just awarded 3rd place at this years Chicago Beer Society fall tasting. Served in a Snifter.

rating from memory, on tap clybourn, tried this next to a sample of second hand smoke (which is the second runnings of this beer) and the bar tender was right when he said, "you went from everything to nothing". anyways, onto the rating...pours black with no head. very strong dark malt smoky nose, like smoked meats and campfire. flavor is very smoky and meaty. alcohol is well hidden. a very delicious brew.

EBF 2007: Pours a clear brown color with a light tan head. Aroma, smoky with some chocolate and caramel. Flavor, chocolate and some smoke, very malts, a little warming, but overall good stuff.

GTM ’ 06 Draught. Stone smoked aroma. Rich with malt. Mostly opaque, cloudy dark brown. Virtually no head. Ring. Very sweet flavor. Smoke is evident.

draft - Pours dark brown with very little head. The excellent aroma is mainly of smokey, toasted malt. The flavor is similar as the smoke notes come through very nicely. There’s also some mild alcohol noticeable. It’s lightly carbonated and full bodied, going down very well and providing a pleasant, warming finish. Rich and full, this is a very enjoyable brew.

Draft at Clyburn brewpub. Aroma: heavy caramelized sugar, roasted malt, a little dark fruit, and an inviting smokiness. Appearance: Dark, dark brown with small red highlights. No head. No lacing. Flavor: Sweet maltiness, caramelized sugar, vanilla, light fruitiness, and the smoke. Smoke is well done and at the right level. Tastes like my grill smells when I’m barbecuing. Alcohol is noticeable, but not harsh. Palate: Full bodied. Low carbonation. Moderate alcohol warming on the tongue. Overall: I enjoyed this one. Nice aroma, with a full, rich flavor to back it up. Only complaint was that the carbonation seemed a bit low.

Funny, sweet nose with some melanoidy malt notes, a bit of spice cake, and little suggestion of the significant smoke in this one. Flavor-wise, the smoke is notable and very pleasant, reminiscent of the Shelenkerla beers. This overlays a fairly sweet, raisiny porter.

Sampled at GI Clybourn location, served in a snifter. Dark brown, almost black, with no head. Aroma of smoke, carmelized sugars, vanilla and a zing of alcohol. Sweet, sweet molasses/brown sugar, vanilla, caramel, lots of smoke and a noticeable but non-detracting alcohol presence. Ends with balancing bitterness but overall this one is on the sweet side. Medium bodied with somewhat of a syrupy texture and soft carbonation. I enjoyed it in August, it must be even better in the winter.

#100. On tap @ brewery: Dark black in the snifter with no head and strong smoky malt aromas. Smells very bbq: smoked ham and campfire. In contrast to the smoky aromas its surprisingly light bodied and slightly creamy. Malty woody smoky flavors that are quite sweet and earthy. The taste of alcohol isn’t strong but you can feel the warming in the back of your throat. An excellent beer.
