Commercial Description:
Affectionately called “ED” in the brewery, this flavorful high-gravity beer is based on the Imperial Brown Goose recipe, but with 43% smoked malt and less finishing hops. These changes allow the smokey complexity from the beechwood kilning to come through more in the aroma and flavor. This beer was just awarded 3rd place at this years Chicago Beer Society fall tasting. Served in a Snifter.

tap at the brewpub. dark mahogany with a red throughout. aroma- booze, smokey(meat i.e. bacon, ham, smoked brisket) sweet fruity backbone with a strong smoked meat flavor. smoked apple, woody and light vanilla are here too. a peach like finish with more meat and astringent in a good way. this is full and rich.

What a dork, I’m rating this on my Motorola Q right here at the bar...on tap 8/8/06. now pumped up to 62percent smoked malts. surprisingly smoky in the nose! super dark red. massive rich and dark fruity, almost syrupy mouthfeel. the smokiness adds a bourbon touch. no hint at all of the 9.7percent. warming in my stomach. damn near too sicky on the tongue. woww

On tap at Clybourn 12/16/2005: Very dark brown pour has a thin ring of off-white head. Nice, sweet malty and smokey roasted balanced aroma. Viscous malty sweet and earthy smokey body has nice complexity and a smooth, lightly warming finish. Nice malty presence throughout but is slightly cloying. A nice smoked beer that reminds me of a young Bells Batch 5000.

Tap @ Clyborn location. Blueberry, raw bacon, sweet oatmeal start the aroma. Big rich flavor and mouthfeel. Chocolate, apple, bacon smoke, caramel. Finishes with light chocolate and apple-jerky smoke.

Smells like a liquid smoky link...tastes like a smoked sausage in a glass washing down a beef jerky. And this vegetarian loved every drop! What a great seasonal warmer. I could savor one of these all night, except for the vexing problem of looking down at the glass and always finding it empty!

Clybourn tap. Pours to a red hued dark brown body with a beige head. Light smoked aroma. More smoked woods than meat. Not really dark malts either. The flavor is smoked wood and hoppy smokeyness. The palate is very creamy and has a light dryness.

On tap at Clybourn pub. Pours dark brown with a beige head. Molasses, caramel, raisans, and sweet smoke are all present. All of which get better as the drink has time to warm a bit. A very interesting brew that I will revisit gladly.
