Commercial Description:
A Brown Ale with a bite. An American interpretation of an English classic, with lots of domestic Tettnang and Cascade hops to complement the roasted malt character. Head Brewer Wil Turner says this is the beer he is most proud of out of all Goose Island beers!

22 oz bottle. Saw this at my liquor store back home, thought it looked interesting, and then I found out how limited the distribution is. Pours a reddish brown color (a little lighter than a typical brown ale in my opinion) with no head. Very nice smell of nuts, roasty malt, some bitter chocolate. With the roast, nuts, and chocolate, I was basically expecting a taste of roasted chocolate nuts, but I was slightly surprised to see it more layered, with the nuts first, followed by the chocolate, and a light roasted sweetness throughout. Started off light bodied, but it is actually a bit stronger than at first glance. An interesting brown ale, and though I’m not the biggest fan of brown ales, this is quite tasty.

Pours... brown. Light fiz, which doesn’t last much past the pour. Aroma is very malt forward, chocolate and toffee stand out. Flavor is similar, very malt forward, coffee grounds. Its good, but nothing special stands out.

Bottle courtesy of decoman from TBS. Thanks! Pours a clear but very dark brown. Smell is nuts and coffee - hazelnut, espresso, etc. - you get the picture. Taste is similar. Definite hazelnut, a lingering black coffee aftertaste. Some toffee/caramel in the taste too - sorta reminds me of a bit o honey. Very good, one of the best brown’s I’ve had.

TAP: brown pour, tan head. Nut and caramel on the nose, maybe some slight hop aroma as well. Taste is caramel, cocoa, and slightly bitter. Good brown ale.

22 oz bottle. The beer pours with a thick sticky tan head. The nose is quite herbal and spicy with a prominent hoppiness. Fresh cocoa and chocolate malts with a nice toffeeish character in the middle. A bit of lingering sweet caramel and cocoa that works with the lightly spicy hoppiness. I always thought I hated brown ales, but I find myself liking these more Americanized versions quite a bit. This is the 3rd or 4th that I’ve enjoyed in the last few weeks.

On tap at GABF 2009. Dark brown in color with a medium off-white head. Aroma is nuts, cocoa, mild roast, and caramel. Flavor is caramel and chocolate malt, toffee, nuts, roast, and mild hop bitterness. Medium body with average carbonation. Solid for the style but not a standout.

aroma is of extremely unsweetened cocoa nibs and little else, perhaps a kiss of hops. appearnce is closer to a deep red then brown with nice lingering head that perches well. flavor is of cocoa minus any almost any sweetness and a background of citrus from the cascades that somehow doesnt totally clash. lightly charred flavor rounds it out and ties it together for a very pleasant end.

Tasted 9/23/09. 22oz bomber. Dark brown hue with cavernous bubbles of cream colored head. Aromas of cocoa dust, chocolate, fudge and caramel. Undertones of raisins and maple. Wow! What a great aroma! Subtle yet clean. Discernable and yet melded. Medium bodied with a big dominant malt character. Sweet and smooth palate. Flavors of Toast and caramel. Cinnamon and molasses. Tight effervescence that adds a nice dimension to the otherwise sweet mouthfeel. An almost coffee acidity. Finishes with a decent dose of hops. Dry and floral hops to mix with the malts. Works quite well, you ask me. Great palate roll with an equal dominance between the malts and hops as it warms in my glass. Solid and complex brew! Fun to drink and easy as well.
